rear winch mount

Ive got a 91, and in the winter it gets pretty muddy... Ive mounted a winch on the front, not a big shocker there. However, started to think the other day, if I'm tooling down a muddy road, and it gets nasty, I get stuck how to get out. If I dont want to pull out the direction im going, im hossed. Why not have a rear winch mounted under the bed, or behind the bumper??? Has anyone mounted a winch in the rear (except a hitch mount)??? give me your ideas please.

Lots of folks use a reciever mount front and rear so you can put your single hitch at the end that you need to pull from. They use the trailer plug to power it, which is pretty clean and nice.

Yes, your thoughts are in the proper direction. I had an 8,000 lb warn mounted on rear between the frame rails. It has more uses than you will ever realize; load the boat, load a car on trailer, many other uses that a front winch can't seem to reach. Be sure to run a very large capacity elec cable to it. Pretty soon- - - - you can't live without it!

Yup, I have my M12000 mounted on a 2" receiver for use at either end....As soon as I get my new plow mount on the front I'll make a receiver for that too.

FOXMAN... did you have a rear tank or just the drivers side tank??? I have twins and wonder if I can fit a winch up in there... I'm already contemplating the E series van tank swap out for capacity.
BIGRIG... are these hitches that strong??? that's alot of pull strength. I guess so there is usually 6 bolts mounting them up... and there is only what 4 on the front bumper. So +2 has to be stronger.
BIG & LOTZ, I'm up with the idea of a hitch mounted winch... only issue is I wont remember to thro the winch in the truck bed when I head out for fishing... Im tyically a jump in and go kind of guy... hence the reason I keep 10 or so pieces of firewood under the bed box and also keep 2 diff fishing poles in the box.

You could always install a front receiver hitch and keep it poked up there out of the way until you need it.

Yea, that would be an option... but then I cant really ram things and run it over with that nice winch bumper I have up front...

The hitches are pretty strong, a class 5 would handle a one ton truck for a joke with a winch hauling on it. I have my winch mobile so I can use it anywhere...I mostly use it hauling old Fords on to the trailer to strip them for cash....It's a brute though, the M12000 must be close to 200lbs with the winch mount. I have a big rig battery to power it from. Totally mobile, you could chain it to a tree if needed.

funny bill, real funny... BigRig, that is the other thing... hefting that thing on is a chore... I typically go fishing alone... is good quiet time from family. I guess I will have to think on this more

I had an 8000lb Ramsey, that was mounted on a frame to fit the rear of a Ford pickup. The winch frame bolted into the bumper mounts, then the bumper mounted onto the winch frame. I used a piece of scrap aluminum plate to cover the opening between the bed and bumper, covering the winch. The trailer hitch was a problem though. The weather and tire spray eventually seized up my winch. I then tried (twice)the Costco Champion winches, mounted to my receiver hitch. They were both defective. I think I'm going to see if I can rebuild my Ramsey, and adapt some kind of receiver mount.
I also ran a heavy cable from the batteries, under the truck, to the back bumper.

Ok... So what I'm thinking, if I cant build a containment box for the winch behind the bumper and under the bed. I will have to get a receiver mount and keep the winch secured under the bed box and just install it on the trail as needed.

That would be easier though I have seen guys make crossmembers to fit in the framerail behind the rear bumper and cut a hole where the license plate goes for a fairlead...works pretty well.They usually end up crawlin under the truck in whatever they're stuck in so maybe cut a small section of the bed floor, weld some hinges to it and make an access hatch.

Yup Yup, I have seen those... winches are pretty cheap on craigslist.com if you have time to wait... I have also seen them with reciver mounts for sale. Think I will just start watching craigslist, and see what comes around. I am in no hurry. Well until the first good rain and I went in a little too far...
