Rear Fuel Tank, '92 CCLB Dually

I was recently given a rear fuel tank from a '92 CCLB dually. It is to be the replacement for the rear tank in my truck, also a '92 CCLB dually. Today I had the time to remove about 3 gallons or so of old fuel which came in the tank. This is not as easy a job as it sounds, even when the tank is sitting in the driveway. There are two openings, the fill and the other, which holds the float and the shower head. Neither opening is at a low point as you rotate the tank. Be that is it may be, I got almost all the fuel out.

Removing the float and sending unit was the more interesting part of the job. I found that I was not the first person to be in that tank. The shower head was rolling around in the bottom of the tank, in two pieces, and there was an extension on the pickup tube. I thought I'd post pictures of that sending unit, and the fuel hose extension, for y'all's edification.

Two answers.

Yes, I got the shower head out. There were two pieces rolling around in there, the rubber, sorta cone shaped, shower head, and a "T" of some sort, which I assume was part of the shower head. Can't think of any other reason why it would be in the tank.

When I say old fuel, I mean that I have absolute;y no idea how old. It smells more like lacquer thinner than it does like diesel. The truck the tank came from had been converted into a trailer at some time, and the rear tank simply left in place because it wasn't in the way of the conversion. The frame had been chopped in front of the bed a ways, and brought together for the hitch. I have no idea when this was done, though, but the fuel is at least that old. It may be older than some of our members.

funny, that you did this today.
i, also did fuel tanks on a 89 DRW.
a spare electric fuel pump helped me get the fuel out fairly easy.
i installed a new sending unit with a new showerhead.

biggest pain in the rear was getting the filler necks on.
while trying to hold it up so i dont bust the fuel lines.

also installed a SD front tank.
so glad that job is done.

When I bought my '89, the PO told me the fuel in the bed-mounted fuel tank was old. Once I emptied it, I realized just how old. It was the color of a brown ale and smelled exactly like you describe.

There was no way I was going to run that in the truck. My dad had a burn pile going at the time so I just burned it there. It flamed up pretty good.

This is what I fished out of the tank. There may possibly be more in there, but I couldn't find it. It almost looks to me as though there ought to be more tubing.

Well... it was worth a try. Apparently you recognized my attempt for what it was.

Seriously, I really do appreciate your generosity and your concern. I was badly in need of that tank as a replacement for mine. You remembered that, and offered me the tank from the trailer. Thank you.

That tank is in remarkably good shape for a freebie. That you were able to get the lock ring off without destroying it is a blessing in itself.
