Rear end modification

Its come time for the 4.10's in the truck to go, and my brother is giving me a free 10.25 with 3.55's. Problem is that my truck is a factory dually, and the new axle off of a truck with a bed, so its spring perches are in a different location than mine. Looking at it, if I built each perch in 3" I can use it. From what Ive read the axle tubes are steel, so welding to them shouldnt be a problem, right? Any advice or opinions on doing this? Clearly Im not afraid of a litle modification looking at my truck, so Im comforatable with the welding and fabrication. Thanks guys

My only advice is that you should really contribute the 3.55s to me.

You will reduce the weight rating of the axle by moving the spring perches inward. If you look at trailer axle specs, their weight ratings are given with the spring perch distance at a certain set point in relation to the hub. More axle hanging out beyond the perch means more strain on the axle tube.

Wheel mounting surfaces are the same. Good to know about the weight rating, but I'm not too concerned about that. The most Im ever going to pull is going to be a 25 foot boat on a tandem axle trailor, so it shouldnt be an issue. Thanks guys

a drw and srw spring perches will be in the same location, are you talking about a c&c verses a srw? the dually rear axle is 3" wider on each side then a srw, but there spring perches are in the same location.

Yea I should of said I have a c&c truck. I'll have to measure the actual width of the axles, that's not something I thought about before

I've done so much reading lately on it that my head is spinning, so I'm not sure exactly what each one was from the factory. The axle in my truck has been a dually for as long as ive known, and my brothers on a SRW truck, but it looks the same minus the perched in a different position

nevermind, I didn't look at your avatar closely, in that pic the axle is definately a c&c

a c&c rear axle is the same width as a srw axle, only difference with them is where the spring perches are. other then moving the spring perches everything will be fine. the reg. truck dually rear axle is wider then both of them, if you ask diesel brad i know he put the specs out in another post about all the measurements for each axle.

the spring perches on my pickup axles are cast. just fwiw.

This is not a big deal I have moved spring mounts several times for this very reason. Hit the weld with a grinder adn work down thru the weld, then clena up the mount and reweld it in the proper location. I do one at a time adn use a level to make sure to keep the pinion angle the same.
