By the time i leave the house its almost to full operating temps and she runs perfect all the way to school.well when i leave school i let her run for 2-3 mins to build up oil pressure and warm up a hair bit and when i leave if i get on it it gets to about 2600 and sticks ya back in your seat.it only does it when its cold its fine at operating temps.yall got any ideas on what it is?

The injection pump has a cold advance that is activated until the coolant temp reaches about 130*, then it kicks down. The pump is advanced a couple of degrees internally, and there is a plunger mounted externally that raises the idle speed. The sensor is mounted in the head behind the thermostat housing. The rear wire on top of the injection pump advances the pump, and the plunger has it's own wire. You should try not to get on it too hard until the advance kicks off. If you listen to the idle as it is warming up you will hear it kick down when it gets to about 130*. Same as you are driving if you are at a steady speed you should hear a change in engine sound (less diesel knock) when the advance comes off.

Sounds like its sucking air or as already posted. You leaving school while on the electro mechanical advance. Now saying you do not have the advance set up I'm going with sucking air. Our engines will run like someone added a couple of extra cylinders to it when we run out of fuel or suck in some air. It really changes the advance mechanics of the pump.

To find out if the cold advance is working, turn the key on without starting, press the go pedal to the floor, then see if the Hi cold idle solenoid plunger has advanced on the IP pass side, if it has not, see if the connector is plugged into the temp sensor located by #1 cyl glow plug, There should be 12VDC to the Hi cold idle solenoid and on the cold advance solenoid on the IP drivers side. The plunger on the Hi cold idle solenoid can be adjusted with a 1/4" wrench to set the hi idle at around 900 RPM.

Your very welcome. As you "hang out here more" you will see so many ways this forum continues to help all comers. Some new members come here asking by saying "this is probably a stupid question".. Actually no question asked is stipid. Its better to ask how the injection pump comes off than removing it the wrong way. This forum has seen and figured out most if not all the possible issues that can happen. When a crank breaks usually there is a problem. But some here feel a broken crank usually is from a turbo block engine. Many of them have been but the why they broke has never been found. My thoughts are someone installed the wrong flywheel. Vibration builds and fatigue creates stress cracks. So far nobody has spent the money to have the broken cranks investigated by a metallurgical lab for the cause. Very few things just happen. There is a cause. Finding it can be expensive.
