Other than waiting foir "wait to start" light to go off, what else should I do to start this truck? Is there a "high Idle" that should be coming on?
Thanks

when I start my truck I push the throttle pedal al the way to the floor then release it then start my truck after the GP's are heated that way the high idle is on when its cold out.

Yeah with the key on, your fast idle solenoid is activated by depressing the throttle. About half ways is good. I hold it there during cranking and release the instant it starts. I have my fast idle on a manual switch;Sweet
I always let er warm up for a bit before I go and keep a light foot till fully warmed up.

Where does the 5 second burst of ether come into play? No one has mentioned that?

Umm, ok:dunnocookoo
with temps in the low 30'sF I usually start crancking before the wait to start light goes out. The crank never makes 2 revolutions using starter power, I am definitely grateful for a quick starting engine:sly

you have to have pedal depressed for high idle to kick in? Mine does the rough idle/cab shaking without me touching the go pedal

next time you start your truck try this,
first turn the key on
push the go pedal all the way to the floor then release it
wait for the GP's to heat up
then start your truck
the high idle should have kicked in and no more cab shaking and rough idlle
after a certain point the high idle will come down after the engine warms up

Welcome to the forum. Its as posted above. Depress the throttle pedal so that it sets the fast idle. These injection pumps are nothing like a gasser carb where you can pump the throttle and it dumps more fuel into the intake to help start. No amount of pumping the throttle pedal on our trucks will do anything. Usually at a very low temp its posted on the drivers sun visor to hold the throttle pedal all the way down till the engine starts. Then lift fast because its going to run up the rpm. The more you use of the throttle to start the more diesel fuel is delivered to eash cylinder dureing cranking speeds. But again pumping will do nothing..

Just my 2-cents, but I like to let her crank over a few times to get some oil flowing. Kinda like 4play. After a few seconds I push the pedel down a little to kick in the high idel. Hope this helps.

I remember my shop teacher saying something about his psd cranking a few times just to let the oil lube everything up......mine cranks over a few times anyway -cuss hardstarts

Yes there is a high idle that should be working. As mentioned you can press the pedal before starting and that will set the high idle. Not really nessessary to hold it while starting. Once youve pressed and released the pedal once the HI is set.

That being said I usually start my truck standing outside because I always let it run 5-10+min before going anywhere, so I just start it and then jab the pedal once with my hand to bring the HI in.

Also FWIW, on my truck the HI runs for 3-5min usually and some people will tell you theyll drive it as soon as the HI goes off, but I generally let it run for a few after the HI has gone off. How much longer just depends on the weather.

Just because the HI has gone off doesnt mean the engine is up to temp or even warm. The HI is mainly for intial starting assistance.

I hit the pedal while I wait for the GP relay. Then just hit the starter. Starts right up even below 30 degrees.

For all of those that still have a fast idle solenoid and hooked up, as soon as the key is turned ON, the throttle pedal should be actuated to the floor one time to set the solenoid. The FI is not strong enough to advance the IP throttle against the return spring without doing so, your taking a chance of burning the coil up. The FI solenoid is very expensive to replace. It says 88 to 90, but will fit any 6.9 or 7.3 IDI.
One other thing, if you don't have the FI operative, you may just as well disconnect the Cold Idle Advance solenoid on the IP.

My 92 F450, 7.3, has a non functioning fast idle. What exactly tells it to activate?

Is it tied to engine temp sensor? How and where?

Is there a test to see if the fast idle solenoid works by it's self?

How do you troubleshoot it?

Thanks...
