So I have heard much talk about not letting a diesel run out of fuel.. but from what I've been gathering simply turning the motor over will prime the fuel?
I am going to replace my fuel filter, and I have a suspicion that my rear tank may have a broken feed so after it being half empty it has "run out of fuel" can I switch tanks and filters and then motor to prime or am I missing something?

Yes turning motor over will prime the system, it helps to have a full fuel filter and cracking open the injection lines to release the air and closing them when fuel reaches them. Modern diesels running out of fuel can quickly ruin fuel pumps and harm parts, in ours it's not so bad but it does take a little time to bleed the system and it's probably not all that good for the pump to be without fuel but I'm aure there is some residual fuel left to lubracate it.
