I am doing an oil change on my 93 an was thinking about going to synthetic what is everyone thinking on this is it worth it for our trucks or not?

and what grade oil should i use the truck is worked hard most of the time.

If you run your truck when its really cold and judging by your avatar pic you do, You will appreciate how much better these things start when cold with 5W40

My truck loves Mystic JT-8. Oil reports all come back good.

Synthetic is a superior lubricant, but it isn't cheap. I run it in everything (except my 6.9 at this point as it leaks substantially at the valve covers) and use a 10,000 change interval. If the engine doesn't leak or burn it like a freight train, I'd say run it!

If your engine is tight mount a bypass filter to extend changes and run a quality synthetic that isw designed for our engines. I run Amsoil 15w-40 diesel and marine . It's been in there for over 70,000 miles without a change and still tested out good about 1000 miles ago. Depending on how much Im running it, I;ll get aqnother test in probably another 5 months. Its got aq pour point of -44 deg f and to top it off, I have had numerous conversations with the lubricant engineers at AMSOIL About these lighter grqade oils in the diesels, and for our engines and other heavy engines, the 15w-40 is the best choice, the lighter oils are for diesel cars and lightweight vehicles except for cases in EXTREME arctic conditions, but with a -44 deg pour point, you are going to need a block heaqter below that any how so a thinner lube is a moot point

70000 miles out of ONE oil change? Tell me THAT isn't saving money!! That's 23 oil changes for me at about $50 a pop. $1127 in oil changes. How much does it cost to have a bypass system installed, and then fill it with amsoil? I bet certainly not $1127.

Well, having worked that out, I am ashamed to say I run the walmart "brand" of premium diesel oil. 15-40 year round. I don't seem to burn more than 1/2 a quart per change, and it's never given me any issues. However, I will add a bottle of Z-maz every second oil change. It costs me about $60 a year to buy Zmax, and if it don't do anything but give me a piece of mind, that's cheap insurance if you ask me.

For the most part, these trucks do NOT like the new formula of Rotella. The "new" formula is all you can buy now, and I have had *****-poor results with it. I burnt like a gallon in 3000 miles. I bought 5 gallons of it, done one oil change and poured the other gallon in my fuel tank rather than in the oil pan.

I would say that so long as the oil is new, NOT Rotella and it's of the right weight, you cant go wrong.

There are NUMEROUS oil threads in this forum already. However, I am not flaming you for creating a new one, as new opinions and brands could exist since the last thread. But, for maximum facts and opinions...do a search of oil brands in the forum and read up. There are some good points in there that could be missed in this thread.

I run the cheap wal mart 15-40 with a baldwin PSD filter and just change it a little more often then a more expensive oil. I have got a very clean engine....oil stays quite clean for about 1500miles after a change.

Even the walmart brand oil is good for at least 5k miles.

Seen some impressive used oil analysis with that stuff over on bob is the oil guy forum.

If you can find the non-LE formula of Delo 400 15W-40, get that. My truck does better with it, but I think they might have stopped making it... I should look into this bypass filter and run the AMSOIL in mine, especially if I never have to change it again...

I use rotella t triple protection 15w-40 on two diesel pickups. One of them is a 6.0 powerstroke and that oil keeps the 6.0 running. So it should have no problem with a 7.3

That rotella is NOT good in an IDI. It's like self changing oil.
