Oil out the exhaust

OK I know these trucks are natorious for burning oil, but the other day when I started it up just to run it for a little while ( it has the speedo cable out, looking for a new or used one right know, that is less than Fords 69.00 one, so it was just idleing). I went around back and I put my hand by the exhaust, and when I lifted my hand and looked at it, it was specled with oil.

Is this normal. Just making sure everything is a-ok.

Was it oil or soot mixed with moisture? Need more info, how long had it been since the last time it was running, had it sit for long time?

Soot mixed with moisture...

Think of it like a iced glass of coke in the summer... the outside of the glass of coke is warm compared to the inside of the glass so moisture from the air collects on the outside of the glass - well in your situation the outside of the exhaust pipe is colder than the inside of the pipe so..... moisture collects in the inside of the pipe which as the engine runs it will push the moisture out the end of the tailpipe. It will take around 15-20 mins to fully dry the inside of a exhaust system.

This is why in town cars that never see much running besides to the store and home again (basically short drives) will always need exhaust systems replaced more often than cars that live in the country.... this is because the ones that live in the country have to drive about 15 mins or so plus one way to go to the store...

Next time you leave work watch the tailpipe of your favorite co- worker as they punch it whilst they pull out of the parking lot... you will see a small stream of moisture run out of the tailpipe...

You have nothing to worry about in your situation.

If you just need to replace the speedo cable itself, and the housing is OK, they have the universal replacement kits. Cut the cable to length, and crimp on the cable end. Check the Help! section of your local parts store.

I guess what you guys are saying makes sense. It hadnt been ran in about 2 days. Thanks for the replies.
