Eventually, the new truck (Raylan) will be getting a sound system. Iirc, someone here did a single DIN head unit with a motorized 7" monitor. Boss audio maybe?? In any case, I'm thinking that I'd like to do something similar to integrate a couple of rear cameras and GPS. It's been 15 years since I've done more than slap a new head unit and some upgraded replacement speakers in a daily driver. I'm thinking that maybe some of you are a bit more up to speed on what's new and cool! Please bear in mind that this will be a budget install...

i have been wanting to do the same thing and would like to have one additional module. a tire sensor monitor for my truck and trailer. i have had 4 blow outs in the past 10 years or so and they are not fun. i did some "quick" looking into it and at least around here you will not find a new pop up screen. everything is moving to a double din set up. companies skip the whole drive mechanism that can break easily moving the screen around. i have also seen on at least my generation the dash pad gets in the way of the screen position.

i think it would be easier and more robust to go to a double din but unless you want a custom overhead or center console you will be doing some dash surgery. still possible and i have seen some decent swaps on the internet but it will be some work.

i would also think the newer units would be more flexible programming inputs. i don't know a lot about raspberry pi but i have heard you can program custom interfaces with that also.

You could always get a rear view mirror with a screen for the back up camera. Doesn't help much with the GPS though.

Maybe you should get a Lincoln Mark LT. You seem to want a lot of "fancy" in your truck. Don't mind me. I'm just funnin you a little bit. Way too fancy for me, but it sounds like a cool idea.

crutchfield is my sourcebook. amazon is where I check for the deals.
quality is not necessary for me. I'm left ear deaf from years of shooting without protection. I'm good if I can feel my music. :D

I don't mind! You can poke fun at me all day long if you like, I've got a thick skin... considering we use the truck to do a fair amount of Interstate travel, and we enjoy music and use a GPS already it would be nice to unclutter the dash. In regards to the cameras my wife is not very good at, and does not like directing me back to hook up the trailer, so a backup camera would contribute to domestic Harmony. I said a couple of cameras because in addition to a backup camera on the truck it would be nice to have a high mounted wide-angle camera on the RV which is our home. In case it needs to be spelled out the camera would be for additional security without having to go outside to check...

That would be perfect for Diego or any other bricknose! Raylan is a obs and as such has a different cubby, but you know that... After reading a lot of the reviews of the motorized 7-inch screen single DIN head units they seem problematic no matter how much you spend. It looks like a more conventional head unit in the stock location is what I will eventually do. More than likely a windowless commercial cap is in the cards as well. This of course renders the rearview mirror useless, so I could mount a multi-function monitor in its place...

I seem to remember Raylan being an automatic? What about @subway suggestion of building a custom center console to house a double din unit? I'd definitely consider it in mine, but I have a shifter right in the way.

I can agree with an upgraded sound system (which for me is a Pioneer CD deck, Kicker speakers, and an 8" Solo-baric), but the rest sounds like extraneous junk to me, but to each their own..... :dunno

The only trailer I use any aid with hooking up is my car dolly, I have a $.97 orange driveway marker that I set in a 1/4" hole drilled in the coupler handle on the tongue.
Of course, most of the trailers I haul on the bumper take a pintle hook. LOL

Here's a 3/8" marker, slightly more expensive than the one I use to tell me where the tongue of the trailer is: https://www.menards.com/main/mcom/o...2431821539.htm?tid=5070601943826507776&ipos=1

I've seen a couple of non-motorized single-DIN with 7" lcd - it just sticks out and down 2 din's worth.
I'm wondering about one that can stick *up* by a din's worth above the stereo - if it was far enough out from the bezel, it might clear on an OBS truck.
Any thoughts?

That's not a half bad idea! I'd seen those as well, but I hadn't even considered them. If clearance was an issue you could always make a spacer so it's stuck out a bit further. I'll have to investigate...
