might be ip time

yesterday i drove 120 miles rt and 5-6 times i had a surge in power, always an increase never a loss, it was like stepping on the pedal a little but i wasnt.
when i got where i was going i got out while it was idling (cool down) and i caught a whiff of the exhaust, eye burn city and a little blue, about like cold morning smoke. i think its importand to note that the surging was always at highway speeds, also this pump has about 115k on it so its no surprize if its heading south. i have a 4812 pump on my 7.3 that i can use so its not really a money deal but id like to know for sure before i do the swap

Unless I'm mistaking it don't sound like the IP to me sounds like your getting air in the system somewhere

sounds like air to me also.
kinda like when start run a tank out of fuel,must change the timing just enough.
i have 187,000 on my pump,original as far as i can tell

Mine did the same thing only when it was cold, when it warmed up didn't have the problem, it felt like I had a 400hp diesel under the hood, tires would spin almost scarry, had to cover the clutch all the time in case it took off while I was turning. Any how I just changed IP's and it doesn't do it anymore. I checked all over for leaks and couldn't find any. I didn't change any return lines or o-rings so I figured it had to be the IP. Just .02

Air gets into the small internal transfer pump built into the end of the pump rotor. Once the transfer pump has such a hiccup, the momentarily reduced transfer pressure into the cam piston circuit/ and housing has that "scalded cat" effect on engine response. :Sly

Probably more luck than anything. I had this problem on an automatic transmission truck that had an air leak. Wow it was awesome!!

the first thing i did was check for air at the schraeder valve- none, i did change my fuel filter and cut the old one open, it seemed to be in good shape even after running 10% wmo for several months, i have some free time today so im going to try to make it do it again

i tried for a repeat performance today but no dice i think im going to go ahead and put the pump change on the to do list along with fresh set of injectors and lift pump, all have 115k so at this point it probly good preventative matenence
