Mercedes 300d (?) question

Some one has main bearing problems and asked Me about changing them, I have not much idea about this engines but I thought it was best to have an oil sample sent to blackstone first. I opened the pan of this engines before but never attempted to touch their piston rods, can I do this from below if necessary or do I have to get more into the engine?
