Love my IDI! Now...

Hey everyone I was a 460 gas truck fan and recently had a 92 250 4x4 given to me for painting two vehicles for a lady. I originally did the deal thinking that it was a powerstroke, then when I got it I realized it was a non turbo! I was kinda bummed because I remember the old chebbies were pigs. the truck I have has 150,000 mikes and has been sitting for 4 years since the ladies husband passed. I was having problems starting it after it sat for a couple of hours. Then I found this forum. You guys rock! I've been taking advice on this forum and learned alot. This is my first diesel and I love it! I replaced the o-rings and tees on the returns and the fuel pump and it starts great now. Just wanted to say thanks , and I'm hooked on the old IDI and its torque!

please, please, don't EVER compare the 2 again..... yes they are quite animals, my '92 has 37's on it and in first, second and third it'll break loose or bark the tires (with 3.55 rears!!)! lets see a 6.5 do that!

I love the simple engine. Parts are cheap what more can you ask for? I want to crank up the pump, Is this worth the time? or just leave it alone? nice scout by the way. I have a 79 traveller and a 78 scout ss .

And then we wonder where some folks come up with ideas for smogging old diesels, or removing them entirely from the roads like they'll be doing in Cali comes next year... I'd laugh my ass off if you get slapped with that $500 or so ticket for obstruction of traffic or even reckless driving, too bad by then you'd have done more harm to the diesel community than you'll ever be able to make up for in your lifetime... Are you a teenager, by the way?

Ken, you misunderstood me - smoking people ****** them off, I know I sure as hell hate it when some young hotshot flies past me like I'm stopped, pouring black clouds out his stacks, and I'm stuck breathing all this ****. Don't take me wrong, it is not that I hate it because I cannot do it with old tired IDI - I also happen to have a very nice and quite powerful W900 tractor that can black out an entire freeway if I want it to, but what's the point? All I'd be doing is ruining everyone's day, and wasting hard-earned money up the stacks. The only smoke I'm getting out of this thing is for a few seconds immediately upon an upshift before the turbo spools up good, and I can still out-haul and when bobtailing likely outrun about any goofball in a smoke belching pickup truck... So yeah, smoke don't make you look manly or anything, actually in the eyes of anyone who knows diesel at least a little you look like quite the moron. And in the eyes of those who don't know nothing about diesels... well, those are the ones who call the local police department with your license plate, and then upon their convenience proceed to paying a visit at the local city hall and filing a complaint against diesel truck owners - which in turn causes the city reps to get on the local PD to get on diesel truck owners, and then we all get canned. This is exactly what happened in Cali (only at a much larger scale), and there are also many other states that are doing research on smogging diesels as well...

So please, for everyone's sake, do NOT smoke people just cause you can, if someone is riding your ass for miles by all means do make them back off (tho I prefer downshifting without hitting the brakes), but don't do it just cause you and/or some ofyour buddies think it's cool - it ain't, you're only shooting yourself in the foot with a rocket launcher, and you're also creating conditions for a very bad pile-up how would you sleep if you know you caused an accident that cost someone's life?

no I only do it to butt heads on the interstate who drive a creeping 55MPH then smoke them out on a long stretch of highway

Hey, I happen to be one of those buttheads - 55mph gets me to places just fine, it may take me a bit longer but I do have plenty of time for reaction against road hazards and including morons who should have never been licensed to drive anything larger than a riding mower... Did I mention that I also get 21mpg when I drive 55mph? My F350 is governed at 3800-3900 rpms (yours ain't), so I can hit 100 mph (you can't), and my brakes will handle stopping from that speed just fine too (yours won't), but I really really really do like those 21mpg... So yeah, 55 mph suits me just fine, thank you very much. By the way, most roads have two lanes, if someone slows you down feel free to pass them - no need for essentially giving them the finger by rolling the coal...

Edit: in case you're wondering, I'm 25, I learned to drive on an 18-wheeler, and I used to be a test driver for the brakes development department of a major automotive supplier. So it ain't like I'm too old (as if there is such a thing), or I haven't ever driven fast, or that I can't handle a large vehicle ;-)

It's hell here too. We have to smog test every year in reno and vegas. We also got 775-686-smog for smoking complaints. Most complaints to that number are legit. A few are what I would call 'personal attacks' or 'the new roadrage'.

It's bad enough for those folks in CA, they haven't been able to buy diesel cars, and now they are getting a range of diesel trucks pulled out from under them.

When I think of the amount of time I have spent with one of my veg burning non computer controlled diesel cars ( that burns almost completely smokeless aside from if you completely bury your foot in it getting on the freeway to get into traffic, which is rare around here )at alternative energy shindigs trying to educate all the greenies with their heads in the sand about the benefits of diesels over hybrids and plug ins , I find most are pretty open minded, especially when they hear about what the rest of the world is driving around in ( we don't get the high mileage diesels the rest of the world gets, they're afraid to market them here, not luxurious enough for the US market As my friend from England who was just visiting couldn't believe that the little tiny rental car he got had to be filled every 350 miles when the big van he has at home goes close to double that and he's getting 45 mpg out of the thing) Heck there are 90 mpg diesel cars rolling all over the world that contribute less pollution than most hybrid / electric vehicles that we don't get
But the moment those greenies get out on the highway and get smoked... it's all down the toilet, I't's mama get me a Prius and call my congressman.

back on topic.... you don't want to turn up your pump until you install a Pyrometer. That's a very important point to make. You should consider getting one anyway, since even stock IDI's can run pretty hot on long grades, and a pyrometer can help you monitor your trucks health over the long term. But yes, once you get one turn up the pump. Go after some of the cheap easy breathing mods and you will still be able to get a few more HP out of it.
