I will be using the truck this summer for work but in the fall I am wanting to do a compleate restore I have found a good line on a bed and cab for my project but while I will have everything off the frame I was thinking about getting my engine and trans rebuilt but I don't trust any of the shops in my area to do it right. Also looking for someone that can paint my beast or at least help me paint it this fall and winter because I do not have a building to put it in to do it. my paint will be http://www.paintforcars.com/kits_sapphirebluemet.html for the main body and bed. http://www.paintforcars.com/kits_silvermetallic.html
for the big stripe down the side. My engine puller is a Ibeam that has grown in to 2 trees in my side yard.

Why are you getting the engine rebuilt? What are its symptoms of failing? Usually its the body that falls apart well before the engine with these old diesels, of any sort. I like to have an untouched engine if possible.

X2, some of those reman, new parts just ain't the same quality as what you got now. If he's planning on driving it through the summer my guess is its fine. I'd do a fuel system overhaul if your lacking power or if it just doesn't run right. No need in breakin the bank on a rebuild kit that wont last. But as for that E4OD. Whats wrong with it? I've had quite an adventure with mine...

well the engine has an oil leak that I can not find and the rebuild for it is just an idea for when I do the re restore my trans goes in to gear a little hard in 2nd and when wormed up it likes to skip 3rd and go right in to od at about 30 mph my tach and spedo work fine but my od light is blown so I cant get codes off it. The po beat the truck in to the ground and I am trying to bring it back.

Well thank you sir for saving another IDI :D where are you finding oil at? and how many miles are on the truck as it sits?... As for the trans, i'm gonna try to save you 1800-2500 bucks on a rebuild. First, look at your wiring harness that goes into the transmission on the passenger side, make sure it hasn't loosed up or got melted on the exhaust, mine did both. Second try your TCM on the bottom of your drivers side firewall, there will be one bolt on it holding on a plastic cover, make sure its nice and tight and its not too dirty etc. Next your gonna want to check your throttle postion sensor (tps/fipl) its the black plug on the drivers side of the injection pump, the middle wire is grey with a white stripe, stick the positive probe of a multimeter down through the rubber peice until you feel metal and ground probe on the battery ground. The reading should be between .96 to1.1 and idle and 3.85 is what you want at wide open throttle. to adjust the fipl there are two srews on a swivel type thing, just loose those up and move it until you get a proper reading ;Sweet check those and see what happens

oil is coming downthe back of the enging and dripping off the trans pan and no it is not atf it is moter oil and Ican not find that leak anywhere it just started after I changed my IP so maby I did not get the gasket in the ip gear cover right on the back side so That will be checked in the next day or so but the top of the engine is clean so I dont thank thats it. I will check my trans for all that as soon as i can track down my meter one of the family desided to use it and not let me know.

Hmmm. that oil leak sounds like a man would have to look at it see exactly where its trailing from. If its coming from the lower part of the engine and kind of blowing back on the pan i'd say its a rear main seal. thats usually where its comin from when its on the trans from my experience. I've had several of these trucks, don't feel like counting lol, and all of them but two have had good rear main seals that didn't leak.

Gotta drop the trans and remove the flywheel. there will be a plate that is behind the flywheel. Its pretty easy to change out its just gettin the transmission down and everything.

take a small mirror,,in the evening..start truck,,and look under the bottom center of the ip. with a flashlight, and mirro, can see this easier in the dark. if its leaking out the bottom of the ip,,the internal shaft seal is bad..

I heard there is a shop in interlocken that rebuilds the E4OD for 1500 or 1700 installed. Can't be too many tranny shops there. Sounded like he had a good reputation, maybe worth checking out. he may be able to do the diagnostic on the tranny and see if the main seal is leaking.

CAREFULL with value line paints, paint is not paint and there is a reason quality costs money. Ive found the cheaper paints dont go down as well, dont cover as well, and dont hold up to UV exposure as well either.

And the problem with ordering online is there will be no product support. That may or may not come back to haunt you. All paint houses will have a value line that will come close to those prices, but you will have the advantage of having immediate product and customer support.
