leaking gear oil

I scanned a page from my Haynes manual. I bet your hub nuts are this type, even my '85 has this type. Note the right side has right-hand threads and the left side are left-hand threads.

I am going to throw this into the doomed thread too...

Pack the bearings in grease when you change out the seal. It is one of the instructions in the FORD service manual.

A member here did not do this and tore up a spindle a d bearjng n so forth in no short order.

Chang out gear fluid and if you have a posi and can afford the rebuild kit do it to since axles come out to do hub seals...oh ya do both hub seals too and use correct spindle nut socket

And torque the 12 bolt cover correctly

Rub yer belly and pat yer head whist hopping on one foot winking and wiggling yer nose too
