My 1985 F-350 2WD Twin-I-Beam has KING-PINS, right ??

How do I know when they need replacement ??

I am piece-by-piece re-building my tired, but well maintained, old front-end.

Thanks.

Jack the front end up, and put a long bar under the wheel, try and lift the wheel with the bar. If there is ANY movement, they need replacement

King pins

King pins are in the place of ball joints on a differant set up.
There should be no to minimal movement top and botton in and out and up and down.
Jack up the wheel and check for movment pull on the top of the tire wile pushing on the botton and vise versa.
The bar trick works well also especially for up and down play.
Good Luck

King pins can also fail by freezing, or sticking. If your steering wheel does not return to center after the turn, you may have sticking kingpins.
