International 1600 uhaul truck

I found a 1988 International 1600 uhaul truck, anyone know much about the 1600? Will the block AND components be the same as what went into the same model year Fords? The truck is a great deal if the engine can be swapped into my f350 CCDRW. I'm afraid the high miles on my truck are telling on themselves as it seems I could hear the engine knocking this morning when I cranked it up. I figure the only thing that will be remotely the same will be the long block. I'm assuming that the transmission, and the ancillary engine components, IE starter, fan alternator etc will NOT be the same. Can someone shed some light on the subject for me? I'm looking to swap whatever is compatible into a 1990 F-350 CCDRW.

What trans dose it have? If it has a C6 all the rear engine stuff will fit. If it has a Allison trans or a Medium duty manual trans it will have a SAE bell housing and SAE starter. If you just want the Engine all the ford stuff will fit if you remove the SAE parts. Check out my build thread over on FTE. I worked for uhaul fixing trucks. I guarantee you that engine is not the original. Its probly had 3-4 engines put in it. Customers blew those up often. The replacement engine came complete in a crate. Has an alternator, ps pump, belts etc.just bolt it in and go. 2 of us did an engine swap in a walmart parking lot in just a few hrs.

I wouldn't trust a U-haul engine for one minute, without driving it. Too many people put gas in a diesel by mistake or just plain ignorance, or couldn't read "Diesel Only".

It wouldn't be a C6 if it's an International chassis...IIRC all of U-Haul's IH trucks had Clark or Spicer 5 speed manuals, with 5th being 1:1. If it's an automatic, it's probably some sort of Allison.

Swapping the engine into a Ford is possible, but it's going to take quite a bit of work. Pretty much everything bolted to the engine, from the front accessories to the exhaust manifolds to the oil cooler to the transmission adapter plate, is going to need to be replaced with parts off the engine in your CC. Also, the IH-spec injector pumps are governed lower (IIRC 2800 RPM, but I might be off), so you'd want to swap the IP. to one built for a Ford application.

With that said...as OLDBULL pointed out, I would be VERY wary of that engine...that engine (and the entire truck) has seen quite a bit of abuse from people who have no business driving something that large...

Any of the ones I rode in always had spicers. Last one I rode in beat the pants off a 2003 GMC. not kidding. that gmc was a gutless anemic toad. The renter of it ended up getting the diesel 26' uhaul instead because the GMC (with 33k miles I might add) had a "feature" where the transmission safety switch "failed" It was fixed by getting inside, grabbing the entire plastic column portion of the shifter, and rotating it until you hit "park" Not kidding. you could not use the shifter, you had to grab the entire column. Great repair job there uhaul, and god knows what someone did to that truck.... Basically, the whole automatic shifter pattern was screwed up. If you wanted "Park" it was actually neutral according to the column!

Am always amazed at the number of nearly-rust-free IDI former UHaul rigs still putt-putting around the Left Coast.

They were regularly lugged, near-overspeeded, and abused beyond words. Average Joe had no idea how to treat IDIs during their time at UHaul.

This guy appears to have a clue about how to be kind to one.

Back about four years ago, there were about 25 of those 26 foot diesels for sale at a large Uhaul dealer here, they also had a bunch of the small cab and chassis van diesels from the earlier 90's. The cab/chassis models had the E40D in them.
We bought one of the 26 footers for 2500 bucks, new tires and all. I brought it home and replaced glow plugs, changed oil, etc and my uncle drove it to Kentucky, then Florida where it still resides and still runs excellent.
It has a Dealers diesel rebuild in it.

i own an s-1600. I can send you some photos of what everything looks like if you want. Don't know much about the ford IDI's but from my understanding it's the same motor with different acessories. A ford 3G alternator fits without major modification so you don't have to worry about that. If you have all the brackets from your ford i'm sure the power steering pump could be swapped (may have to change pullies? i'm not sure). The IP is typically goverened lower than the fords... which was a good call as the motor has never been mollested other than lugging up hills. The oil pan is also bolted on backwards. I'm pretty sure the air filter is much bigger... possibly not... i just couldn't imagine it in a truck. Not sure about the oil pump. Fuel pump is the same.

The block and heads are the same engine in any ford truck or van. But the srest of the bolt on parts are differant. Check the oil pan. It might be reversed on the block. If so simpley reverse the pan but you need to buy another oil pump pickup tube.

if you end up taring it apart and it has a sae 2 bell housing i will by it from you, i need one, please if you end up not needing that bellhousing let me know, i have been looking for one, the junk yard by my place just got rid of all the ones they had,
