Interesting oil leakage

I seem to be leaking oil from somewhere up on the rear of the block. I've read about you guys running a "Slobber tube" from somewhere back there, what gives? It seems to be high up on the rear of the block, dripping down, my starter has oil on it, I haven't looked at the driver's side.

It may be your valve covers. Mine seem to always leak no matter what i do. Eventually it runs down the engine and drips down to the starter.

Could also be, i suppose, the oil pressure sender, the CDR perhaps, and.. theres not much more that'll drip oil from up there.

I would venture to guess that it's either a valve cover or the oil pressure sending unit. It might be worth checking the rear main seal as well. But, only way to know for sure is to go in there and take a look...

The valley pan has a drain that comes out at the top/back of the block, and anything that lands in the valley pan will drain out/down on the starter area. That could include oil, fuel dribbling down from the injectors, water(from a bad hood seal) oily drips from the CDR, and of course fuel from the pump, and I've also seen oil leaking from the backside of the injection gear cover leak down onto the pan and out the back....

Could be your dipstick tube too. Small oring on the bottom might be bad. Makes a big mess too.

I had a leakie return line (the one that goes under the CDR) and thought it was oil but it was just years of oil and dirt built up back there being washed away by the fuel leak

Ferds anti corrosion system.

sounds like the valve covers. Got 3 engines that showed the same symptoms.
Bout $17.00 to fix and 1 skinned knuckle.

My dipstick tube leaks a little...what is involved in fixing it? Does the tube simply pull out of the block so one can replace the oring?

Also, are the rear main seals on these engines a one piece design? I think mine leaks a tiny bit. Whenever I park the truck nose-up on a hill, I'll get a few small drips out of the inspection cover on the trans, but the rest of the time it stays dry.

Check the bottom of the fuel filter. It may be blowing fuel back down the side of the engine and appear to be oil.

Yes, they are. The rear main seal presses into a plate that can be removed from the engine (so you can use a press to push it in), and fits around the end of the crank. Take a look at the pics I attached to give you an idea of what it looks like.

You can tell how much my old rear main seal was leaking...this is why you don't want to over-pressurize your crankcase too much
