You could take your ignition swtich out and see if the tab on the end of the cylinder is broken. There is a pin you push in. It is very small, and if your looking at the ignition lock from the passenger seat, it is at about the 7 or 8 O'clock postion. With the key in the run position, you can then pull the cylinder right out. If that is not the problem, then possibly the rack and pinion have slipped. There is a little gear on the end of the part that the lock cylinder turns, which moves a rack (which is a flat bar with gear teeth on it). This is what actually moves the electrical switch down below.

most likely it is the pinion that slipped, how do i go about repairing that?

You'll be able to tell once you take your lock cylinder out. It may be that all you need to do is remove the pinion and re-engage it. If that is needed, then you will most likely have to pull the steering wheel. That requires a special tool, called a steering wheel puller.

and the thing is it wouldnt be so hard except for that the steering column is a difficult thing to take apart and put back together, ya catch my drift???

that sounds more like the thing I need to replace, my buddy up the road gave me a original lock cylinder and I thought that was the problem but it is the rack and pinion

let me also ask any of you oil burners this, how do you put a cruise control system in one of these beasts?

You dont ,till you get it running. Sorry I really couldnt let that go by.
Find a donor truck and get the steering column and all the attendant parts, wiring and controls, bolts in after that.

well it will run I just need to get some rotella - t and an oil filter, i still have the after market cruise control i found behind the seat.

Ok sorry to burst everyones Glow Plugs but I need your help again, so I fiugured out why my engine won't start with the key fixed that now I need help with the glow plug system, is the glow plug relay and glow plug controller the same thing? and is the thing in the picture the glow plug controller? I know what the GP relay looks like i just don't know what exactly the thing in the picture is? it is toward the rear of the engine near the driver side, is that the controller?

That doesn't look like the GP controller. Look on the back of the block on the driver's side just behind the valve cover. You should see a round connector with multiple wires going into it. The controller is threaded into the block. BTW, sorry I missed your call earlier but I was watching a movie with the other half and she shot me a "you better not answer that" look when I grabbed my phone.

That does go into the block, and has multiple wires, why are they so damn expensive?

It makes it easier for the truck to start. Almost same reason why a distributor on a gasser is so spendy. I'd check wrecking yards for a GP controller and harness from a 7.3L and change it out to the solid state controller setup. There's threads on here how to do it. I did it on my last IDI and getting ready to do it on my current truck too.

Yes, that is the GP controller for the 6.9. Yes they are a spendy little creature.

I'm assuming that you have checked the glow plugs to see if they are working?

I'm gon have to get a multimeter to check the GP's but someone did tell me that the GP's rarley all go out at the same time. so I still need to check them the reason why I'm asking if thats the controller is because now that I am starting the engine over with the key the Glow Plug light does not come on at all?
