IGNITION HOT ACCESSORIES ??

As factory-wired on my 1985 F-350, does everything that requires IGNITION ON have it's power fed through the key-switch ??

Is any of it relayed from the factory ??

Just a short list of what I can quickly think of that only operates with IGNITION ON :

Blower motor.

A/C clutch-switch.

Wipers/washers.

Gauges.

Radio.

C.B.radio.

Electric fuel-tank selector.

Engine RUN solenoid.

Glow-plug relay.

Fuel heater.

Power windows, if you have them (I don't ).

Turn Signals(I just remembered)

I am sure I am missing some.


I am considering putting the load of most of this stuff on relays.

Has anyone else RELAYED any of this stuff and how did you go about it ?? (Get technical. )

Right through the key on your '85. It wasn't 'till '92 when the power distribution box was added to be powered by a starter type relay which is in the old spot of the actual starter relay on pre '92s. Kinda confusing if ya didn't know that '92+ trucks starter relay is actually on the starter.

Anyway, relays come in handy when adding new stuff like upgraded headlights, horns, ext...

That is about what I figured; I don't see how they last as long as they do.

Thanks for the offer; I might run into something that will need a better head than mine to cipher it out.


I think I have them figured out, though I'm no genius, by any means, just smarter than the average bear .


I found a TECH article on relaying the blower-motor, over at the Dodge site, that I think is pretty much what I can do to bring the blower to life; the wire colors will be different, but the principles are the same.

I also am going to build in a relayed IGN-HOT fuse-block to tie in all the little odds and ends that need IGN control.

When I get done with that rat's-nest of a fuse-block that Ford stuffed in there, there won't be hardly any juice at all going through it.

By the way, in my search for electrical goodies, I found a place that has heavy-duty relay pig-tail-plugs with no wires in them.

They have the Packard Clips that you buy seperate, big enough to handle 10AWG wire, that you can crimp/solder the clip to whatever wire and simply plug it in the plastic holder.

I am gonna stock up on those and replace some of the 14AWG gauge pre-wired ones with bigger wire, instead of having the big wire spliced into the smaller wire of the relay pig-tail, like I currently have.


When I remember exactly which place had them, I will post a link.
