Huge 6.9 Problems

Scotty, sorry I can't be of much help way up here but think of this.

There's a certain general order to not quit yer post until properly relieved.

Not gonna let ya do that. Ya have too nice a rig and a plentiful supply of knowledge here use.

Just keep momma in check and look at it this way. It wont cost ya $40k to replace it like a new one would.

I think your right. I will try and see what I can do. I wanna do it, but, I cannot push the financial envelope on it. Just can't. I would have already ordered a drop in if I could have, but that is not an option, so the next best is to freshen up the engine Gary has, put new gaskets and bearings, leave the rings alone, and put it in my truck. If it runs good, she'll stay, if it is a basket case, such as no power, or burns oil like the thrid ring of HELL, one of you guys are more than welcome to it. I really don't want another payment right now, but with my job, if my vehicle is not reliable, it kinda defeats the purpose.

Thanks to all you guys, I have gotten many kind offers and will take you guys up on the water pump and deals with radiators. I am very grateful, some kind folks have even offered to send loot, again, thank you all for the help. This is why I still have the truck. If it was not for you guys, the rig would have gone ALONG time ago. I wished I had the money to drop a new engine in her, that would be the coolest idea, but can't swing that, so the next best is to put some money in the lower end and seal it up with studs and hope for the best.

Another questions, I didn't put but 500 or so miles on the truck since the heads were done, do you think those ARP's are still up to the task, I mean they were brand new, and I know some do not reuse head bolts, but some have and they have held, with studs being quite alot stronger, I would think they would be fine.

Then, I gotta start looking for copper washers, and return line kits, stuff like that. Should be able to whoop it on and stay under the budget with your help. Thanks alot guys. Scotty

One of the biggest reasons I went with the ARP studs when I did my head job is that they can be re-used, unlike the stock head bolts. The studs are actually meant to stay in the engine block permanently, although you should be able to remove them and stick them in the other block unless they Lock-Tite'd them in (in which case they owe you another set of studs IMHO, if they did it without your permission). I wouldn't use stock head bolts on an IDI on a dare, but have no plans to ever replace the studs short of one of them breaking. You should be perfectly fine.

BTW, most return line kits should come with copper washers...if not, I think I have a spare set. If you need them, LMK and they're yours (assuming I can find them)...

I know you got alot on your plate right now, but might be a good idea to post your possible route across. That way you have a better idea of who is around & they can look out for you. If it craps out (& I'm not wishing it on you) within few states of NC & I know approx. when your heading over, I should be able to have a truck somewhat nearby to take all your vehicles the rest of the way to the coast. At this point, that's the only help I can offer ya. DO NOT SELL THAT TRUCK.

Well, thanks Scott ol boy. That is good know.. Really good to know. Usually I take the 40 across, right outta Barstow and run it right in that way, not sure now, may take the 20.. Hard tellin right this second, just depends on how good the truck is running if/when I get it together.

Also, your RDT story was pretty good, made me laugh. Vultures on this board, scared to put a pic of the wife on here. You guys may make ME blush. Your SIL is a cutie though, so when I trade the wife in, she is on the list, plus, since she is already Marine trained, she should fit right in. Woahhhh, Anyhow, thanks guys.

On topic, Ken at DPS called me and chatted about the engine, and he thinks caviatation more than a cracked block. Said he has seen 6.9's do it, said he has barely ever saw a 6.9 crack on the inside, besides the old block heater deal. Anyhow, he also agreed with you TC, about doing bearings and throwing gaskets at it. So I have kinda made my mind up to give Gary's block a good look over and give it a go with that. He said pull the pistons, if the rings look good put them back in, if they look to need to be replaced, he said a good cylinder hone would be enough to get rings to seat. Especially since I will be running it pretty hot and hard with pulling the Jeep and all. So, hopefully, it is going to work out.

Scott, good luck with the wifes cousin thing. Two hot chicks in the same house is two much, I didn't mean you needed a gun for men looking for them, but more for yourself, when those two are together, I would rather sleep in the garage. Scotty

don't pop the pistons out of the holes if you can aviod it at all. durring break-in the rings do tend to wander around in a circle a little and if you pop a slug, they will move around again and you won't get it to seat right again. If there is no reason to, leave the slugs in the holes and just do the bearings.
