How can i tell what year this motor is?

I recently baught a bucket truck. It is registered as a 86 international i believe.. previous owner said they put a 90s front clip on it that reads a 1700.. im curious how to tell what year motor was put into this truck. All and any info is apreciated.im having problems getting it started cold. It came with only a rag on intake screen and was told to soak it in gas to start. I replaced the return hoses and caps because they all leaked.

I'd guess it's the '86. That being said, look for identifying marks. On the fords, the intake manifold has a manufacture date stamped on it.
Now, that's not 100%, but it seems to be pretty close.

Either way... it wouldn't matter at all.
An IDI is an IDI - whatever parts you get basically swap over either way, except for certain things like heads(7.3s have 1/2" bolts vs 7/16" bolts for 6.9s)

Injectors and IP... Pretty darn sure you can get a good set of what's available now for 6.9 or 7.3 IDI and it'll work just fine on your motor. Make sure to go with a reputable vendor for these parts - R&D IDI Performance, Conestoga diesel, or @typ4

I wass going to say, that's not an 80's IH Truck..... That's not a 90's hood either. 80 or 81 was the change, then the next major change was in the early 90's after they became International Trucks (Navistar)... I've driven all 3, and there are major differences in all three.

A 78 would look like this:

An 80's would look like this:

(This one is actually an IH Manufactured Truck) It says INTERNATIONAL across the top bar of the grille and has the IH "Man on a tractor" logo on the outside door handle and)

(This one is a Navistar Manufactured Truck). Has International in the lower left of the grille with "Infinite Road" logo, and the Infinite Road logo on the exterior door handles.

Welcome to the forum. An engine serial number is found on the drivers side of the block top near the injection pump gear housing edge.Clean off the dirt usually shows them very well.
