towd a couple midsized cars and a pathfinder lastnight through some relatively hilly terrain...

alot of 2nd and 1st gear hill climbs with the C6...

I know the manual swap will help..is it time for the IP and injectors to be changed??...or can I just turn the IP and HOPE it gives me more power?

arg...none of the loads weigh 3/4 of what my explorer weighs..and I need to be able to tow her 65 down the dang highway!!

and ALOT of the drivin was on the floor and just barely gaining speed IF ANY!! (in 1st and 2nd!!)

What kind of RPM's were you turning, and what were your EGT's?

Assuming your truck is NA and you are towing with a trailer.

Don't just go "turning up" the IP, the max fuel screw is your safety limit to keep you from overfueling and burning up your motor. The fuel is increased on turbo motors because you have significantly more air available. More fuel WITHOUT more air just increases temps.

What kind of gearing do you have and are you running oversized tires? High gears and tall tires make towing tough.

Based on how my engine ran N/A, you will want to be turning 24-2500 running 65 when towing, and there you should be able to hold speed decentley.
Going 5 speed will help tons, a C6 eats up alot of power.
What rear gears do you have? With 3.55's, 33's and a 4 speed in my truck, if I ran 70, to keep the RPM's up, I was fine, now, with the turbo, I can comfortably criuse at 55-60(speed limit is 55 here) and have the power to pull hills, but, it still runs MUCH, MUCH better at 2400+ thanks to being non gated.
I plan on going 5 speed and at least 3.73's in the not too distant future, along with a smaller exhaust housing so it spools at lower rpm.

Mines runs about 2300 at 65 with the 4speed. I can run 75 at 3100 rpm. I dont dare go over that. Mine is a **** under 2500 rpm. max hp is at like 3100 I think ( or around there) max torque is 2700 I think???? I forget what I read. I try to stay between 2500- and 3100 regardless.

I really think somethings not right if you have a tough time with hills with only a small vehicle in tow, even N/A with 3.55s I could get up a hill and not lose too much punch with say a full bed of hardwood logs or my 20' boat behind me. I can tell it'll be a lot easier with the turbo though.

The throttle cable on my 87 6.9 was stretched a little so under load I could not
get full power. With no load it seemed fine. Just thought this might be something
you could check..........

hmmm....prolly a good idea....never thougth about that...I've broken 1 in my life...could be a little whooped...

I know Offroadohio's HUGE hauler did need some downshiftin..but he's got that 20ft steel bed...but still able to keep decent speed....I was strugglin BAD with one load..(little nose heavy)...but my old I-6 gasser did better than the van does...:dunno

time to start buyin parts...

I feel your pain, man.

I towed an old toyota truck on a heavy trailer about 500mi last weekend. Probably about 6000lbs of truck/trailer/crap. Click for a pic:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7147434&postcount=6

I had no problem going as fast as I wanted on the flats. Any larger hill I had to back off the throttle to keep the egt's under 1200. I have the fuel turned up (probably a little too much). EGT's are the limit for me, i'd melt it down if I kept it pinned.

I find that if I see the truck loosing speed, manually downshifting into second at about 55mph to keep the rpm's up helps lower egt's and help keep speed up. The tranny wants to stay in 3rd WAY too long.

Worst hill was 35 mph up the Grapevine (for the CA folks) with the EGT's at 1200 for about a half hour. Water temp stayed right around 200, though.

I guess I cant complain too much for a $250, 200k mi. truck.

 Y'all may have read my similar posts on this same subject before, not attempting a hijack. I too have had the slow pos ford idi problem. I had just assumed it was a normally slow 80's truck. I recently pulled a Volvo wagon up the sometimes mentioned 'Rainer hill' and only managed 24mph.

You must be registered for see images

Anyway, later I let Calvin (6xcrew) drive, and we were pulling an empty 3 axle equipment trailer. He was disgusted by the lack of power and was demonstrating by mashing the pedal to show me we had no power. SNAP the throttle cable broke. Long story short he replaced it with a new one from NAPA.

Well, I hadn't made the connection until reading this thread, but I do have more power now, and I can generate some smoke at WOT though I could not before. STILL a gutless pig IMO, but I am thinking I might be able to keep up with Calvin's gutless banks truck LMAO.

well...no towin..but did add some stuff...

new throttle cable $38 (about 3/8-7/16 SHORTER..so it was streched!!!)

working hood scoops (pix later..needs another skim coat of bondo and a little love on the intake air side..othersid is for engine air..the van tends to heat bake through when it sits shut off)

adjusted the tranny kick down cable...(actually kicks down now!!)

seemed to run better down the highway to columbus..gonna hook up later in the week for a load...I'll know more then!!
