fuel pump question

so i was wondering, since turning up the fuel pump would be a little risky as ive been told for my 84 N/A 6.9, would advancing its timing put it at equal or more risk, and if not, would it give it any extra grunt worth advancing it for?

turning up the fuel on a na engine is worthless in My opinion, I hope You have a pyro close to the manifold. Now advancing retarding the ip will help the engine run cleaner and more efficiently, but I would suggest having it timed with a real timing tool and not by ear, that is just to get an engine running.

years ago I played with the timing on The E and I could not squeeze any extra power out of her that I could feel by advancing or retarding the timing. Having it set correctly is the best place for power that I found. Turning up the fuel on a NA motor helps but you can so quickly bake the motor because you can't move enough air through her to keep the temps at bay (Exhaust Gas Temps).

You probably don't really want to hear this but really in my opinion is throw a turbo on her - it's your best bang for the buck.

A turbo seems to be a requirement to play with these motors. A natural diesel will never be able to see its full potential. I would start with a good set of matched injectors and a quality rebuilt pump. Time it to factory specs and go from there. This basically is freshening up these motors and replacing medium wear items. Check out BigRigTech's threads. His 6.9 is anemic at this point. He's confident a fresh pump, injectors, and timing will wake it up.

An N/A motor can get more power from turning up the IP, but for the most part it is not going to benefit you much unless you do something to increase air flow through the engine.

For my N/A, the biggest change by far was the exhaust upgrade.

Mostly it depends on the amount of money you want to spend.

For the $300.00 I put into my exhaust and turning up the IP I got a major power increase, but as said, you will never get as much as you will by going turbo, however, a turbo will cost you much more.

What I did was find a wrecked truck with a turbo. I paid $400.00 for it and have all the goodies I could ever want including a turbo and all the pieces.

what all parts would i need and how would i install the turbo? i remember reading having to change the position of some sort of vacuum box or somthing but idr what exactly
