Front Tank Question - UPDATED W/ NEW INFO

Is the OEM midship tank supposed to be plastic? I always thought that they were metal of some sort.

I guess so, I just wanted to make sure that my assumption was correct. This kind of throws a wrench into the works b/c I was planning to put in a heat exchanger for my WVO setup. Oh well, off to infopop for some answers. Thanks for the help

I bought a plastic one to replace my front tank, very nice, but prolly not the best for a heated setup.

just use the back tank for the heated tank instead...or else maybe you can get a metal tank to replace...don't think teh stock tanks are too expensive, and youc ould always get one in the junkyard.

I'm not certain since I never measured it, but for the looks the front tank is bigger than the rear tank by far. I've seen them booth out of the truck, also the front tank is soo much easer to remove.

My truck is a 91 that came from the factory with a 22 gallon plastic front tank.
The trucks that have a metal front tank are 19 gallons.
I am installing a 33 gallon Bronco tank in the rear to use for waste oil.

Mine are both the same size, or at least were. The plastic one I got did say that it fits where in place of the 19 gallon one fit but would have a little extra capacity. I bought a new rear as well, metal, and it was 19 gallons also, so in my case (and I believe most 80's models) are double 19's.

My front tank was a 22 gal, and the PO never said anything about the tankbeing new. Maybe it was a factory option or something?

But did the previous owner buy it new? Could it have had multiple previous owners? It could have been replaced from damage or something rather than rust or maybe it was factory, my truck is an 87, and at one point, I had six of these beasts sitting in my driveway and yard, all 87 or earlier and they all had metal tanks front and rear, but they were all 80's model trucks, so who knows.

[on edit] and they were all the same physical dimensions, which held exactly 19 gallons, front and rear, same as the truck I built from the pieces. I had hoped that one of them had a larger tank, but it didn't.

Hey that doesn't sound factory by the size alone, I think we have 2 19 gallon tanks...but someone will correct me if I'm wrong,

I always thought that it was a 16 and a 19 but I could be wrong. I have never run mine down low enough to really tell how much they can hold.

Both mine were emptied when I bought it. The rear one leaked, so when I replaced it, I know it holds 19 gallons. The front one was drained as it had been sitting, so I know it holds 19 gallons. Now the front one is leaking, I have a new tank but the fuel gauge acted screwy on this tank so I want to get a new sending unit for it, just as I did on the rear tank when I replaced it.
