Found My Oil Leak!!!

I decided that I was going to pull to turbo today and find the oil leak. As I was checking the bolts on the bottom of the turbo to see if the flange bolts were loose, the oil return hose (from my turbo to the valley pan) literally slid off the turbo! When I got the truck going, I had used just plain 5/8" heater hose and intended to change it out later. Well, to be honest, I forgot to do that. It seems that the hose has gotten hot and "swelled", so it's not holding tight anymore and slipped off the outlet. That was allowing oil to drain out of the hose rather than through it. I called NAPA (they're the only ones in town that carry it) and priced up some better temp resistant hose. $11.99 a foot, but since I only need a foot (really only need 6"), so I'm headed up to buy some now and fix this leak so that the other half will agree to take the truck on our coastal getaway this weekend! (Going to/through Lincoln City, so I wanna stop and have lunch with Jeremy -aka In2Fords- and check out each others trucks).

Between the fuel the drained from the pump while turning it up, the cracked injector line that caused me to replace the lines, and the oil leak, I have some nice spots in my driveway. At least it's a concrete driveway and not asphalt! I found out the hard way the using degreaser on asphalt is NOT a good idea... For some reason the oil based asphalt will breakdown and come out in chunks once it's been soaking in degreaser and you hit it with a pressure washer...

The heater hose is actually swelling from the oil not the heat. The hose is rubber and rubber will soften/swell if it is contact with a petroleum product.

Typical heater hose is EPDM, which has better chemical compatibility to water and coolant mixtures, however, it has very poor compatibility with petroleum based oils and fuels. If you replace that with heater hose, you will be doing it again soon. Look for something that is neoprene, nitrile or CPE. If you are in Bend, go see Nate at Fluid Connector Products, he'll fix you up with the right stuff.

Bought that camper that I went to look at today. The guy was asking $200 for it because he's moving and had no way to get it out of there. I offered $150, and walked away with it. I'll be headed to pick it up tomorrow.

It's a style of heater hose, but it's silicone heater hose. It's rated for higher temps and two guys I know on here said it will work for what I need.

UPDATE - Got the new hose installed (What a PITA!) and no leaks so far. I still have the front driver's side injector seeking a bit of fuel out of the bottom of the plastic cap, and the line that runs from the passenger rear injector is leaking a little where it connects to the nipple of the metal return line. I know the end is a little wore, so I'm going to check it out in the daylight tomorrow and see if I can fix it before we head on our trip. I'm going to pick up my camper tomorrow and get it packed and ready to go. Either headed out of here late tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning.

You need to quit fooling with heater hoses and get some Aeroquip hose on there. It's oil rated and you won't have any more problems

Who carries that, or where do I find it? After what it takes to get to that hose with the turbo on the engine still, I want something that will fast FOREVER!

Summit racing carries all the sizes If you have pipe threaded fitting on the turbo end you can get a proper fitting for that end
This site has hose as well, also has the ID size charts to match up.

Does anyone sell it in shorter lengths? I don't need 15' of hose. Total length needed is only 7".

That second place sells it by the foot. Might want to check your local speed shops. We have one around here that selss it by the inch

Kenneth, when you want to aeroquip that turbo drain, I can fix you up, I have a box of stuff to do this kind of work, old helicopter fitting and lines etc.
