Ive got a buddy in wyo. that has an 01 PSD. Claims hes not getting turbo untill his truck warms up (about 3 miles). says it worked fine when warm out.
also said when turbo does finally spool, it sounds like an exhaust brake when letting off throttle. Sounds to me like a waist gate issue, but i dont know much about these . Anyone ever have this issue or similar?

My stepdads 01 PSD in his excursion does the same thing, the turbo wont really spool till she is nice a warm

I'm no power stroke guy, but I think they have some kind of warm-up valve that does something with the trubo or wastegate or something.

There is a butterfly in the pipe. Once warm, then it opens and it works fine. Sounds like all is normal there.

Butterfly in exhaust pipe? What would be causing the Exhaust brake noise. Hes had the truck for 3 years, I think this is a new issue this winter. Appreciate the input, like I said I know nothing about psd systems, wish he lived closer so I could drive and listen.

It's the EBPV (exhaust Back Pressure Valve). It is in the turbo exhaust flange. It closes to aid in the warm up. Some people take manual control over it to make an exhaust brake out of it. His is operating normally.

Make sure it isn't stuck/sticking - you will loose power and hear it like an exhaust brake. They are know to seized close.
