Flashing O/D light. Code 62

Just ran codes. Only getting code 62. Guess I have a torque converter issue. Took it to a trans shop about a month ago (before I had a code reader). The guy didn't say anything about the TC. He tried a new solenoid pack but that did nothing. He told me to drive it as is and eventually my transmission will need to be rebuilt. My O/D light only starts flashing when I driving up a steep incline. Transmission shifts smooth with no slippage when the O/D light is not flashing.

Not sure what to do. I don't want to pay for a new TC then need a trans rebuild later. Not really wanting to pay for the whole rebuild right now either.

I read on another forum about driving with O/D off would help. Trans fluid is full and clean. Any ideas about what to do other than a new TC and/or trans rebuild?

Code 62. Converter Clutch failure, the EEC-IV picks up the excessive amount of converter slip while converter is scheduled to be locked up. Make sure the harness connector on the transmission bulkhead is securely fastend, check connector for corrosion, it could be the converter clutch regulator valve or the converter clutch control valve is sticking.

Did you check the fluid level when the tranny is HOT, engine running and in Park?

There are other thing which will cause the OD light to flash. The codes you get from the reader are often rather vague and misleading.

Is your tach (if you have one) working well? Is it fluttering and jumping? The sensor for the tach is the large, about 1" nut with two wires, on the injector pump gear housing.

There is a sensor on the rear differential which must also be working properly. This one will effect your speedometer, make it flutter and not work well.

Both these sensors feed into the computer which controls your E4OD transmission. If the computer receives what it considers to be a bad signal it will go into limp mode. You don't want to drive too far in limp mode.

He pulled a Code 62. As per poster, it only happens under full load going uphill. He should cancel that code and see if it repeats.

Thanks guys. Checked trans fluid with engine hot and running. Full and red, looks ok. Tach and speedo working fine. This has not been an issue so far. I've cleared the codes several times by removing the neg battery cables. The flashing o/d light keeps coming back but only after I drive 10 miles or so and when going up an incline. Once the o/d light flashes I go into limp mode with no overdrive. If i'm just driving it around town and take it easy on the inclines it seems to be fine.

Will check the harness connection. If no luck guess I will take it to shop to see what they say about the TC. My neighbor owns a transmission shop. Probably should have taken it to him first instead of the other place.

Most likely your converter is getting tired. It's starting to slip under load.

Clutch slip will give you a warning when it does finally decide to quit. You will get a very loud chatter during lock up. When you get to this stage its done. For now when climbing grades, lock out OD. This will help a little.
