The above posting makes some good points but it will not tell you if your at tdc or 180 degrees out. This is a little information about all the gear sizes in these idi engine. The crank gear is half the size of the cam gear. Reason for that is the crank turns twice to one of the cam. Now the injection pump gear is exactly the same size as the cam gear. So it turns one time same as the cam does. This might be amazing to some but its simple phsycics.

yep, have to verify compression stroke, or you are still just guessing. thanks for pointing that out

Your very welcome.. I feel adding the little things helps to finish others statements. Kinda like a cherry on top finishes off a ice cream sundy does.

Verifying compression stroke on #1 can be done easily by just loosening the glow plug on #1 (front pass side) . As the piston comes up on compression(bar it over) there will be hissing of air coming out. If it is on exhaust, there won't. If it is indeed compression, just have to stop with the pointer lined up with the mark on the dampener, and whala, TDC !!
