Engine rebuild???

I am preparing to do the same thing. I am starting a new job tomorrow so I should have the money to do it now. I have a decent running extra 7.3 I was just gonna toss in but now I think I will have it torn down and gone through. Toss in a cam, studs, upgraded turbo and some moose bits. I would like to have it ready to swap in by next fall.

How old are the injectors. When the springs go bad the pop open much sooner and the sound is like a rod knock. You might have a bad injector making the noise. Crack open each injector when its running. See if any cylinder is making the noise.

So when I get to the offending cylinder with the bad injector, the noise will stop? If that is the problem.

That's what they say. I can't speak from first hand experience though.

That should work if you only have one bad injector. If you have multiple bad ones then it becomes more difficult to tell.
