Engine cleaning

Ok so the weather has warmed up here and time to do some work. I wouldnt mind cleaning the engine out but I didnt wanna use seafoam or motor flush... I have cleaned old GM engines with just adding diesel into the engine oil with no oil and letting it clean the engine. alot of times due to water leaks from heads blowing... Can you add straight diesel to the oil pan on an IDI and let it run without reviing it up and let it clean the engine? or will it hurt it? I always let gas engines run for 10 mins or so and clean at idle and then just repeat till clear and then add oil and new filter. Any ideas if it will hurt the turbo or not? thoughts?

Are you saying that you run NO OIL just diesel fuel? With the compression that these engines run I don't think the bottom end would like that. Thats just my opinion.

I have always over filled my motors by a quart with ATF just before a oil change. Just let it idle that way for about 15 minutes then drain. Was told that it will help clean them out so.. But I would not run it without oil. I think diesel would ruin the bearings at the least.

Try Auto-RX it's a little expensive but it cleans all the internals slowly. I use it in all my vehicals including transmissions.

I have yanked engines out stripped them to a long block and steam clean them, put them back in with clean oil pan and V/C and call it a few days and a very clean engine.
but a IDI would take a week.
if it is that dirty D2 will just loosen up the crud and it will just ruin the engine slowly like sand down the intake.

Auto Rx is the only safe way to clean out the insides of an old engine. any kind of solvent ( which diesel falls into that catagory as well along with sea foam and motor flush) will clean things too fast and knock chunks off that can scratch things up and clog passeges up leading to an unscheduled teardown

Flushing with ATF is another incredibly bad idea. It cleans great, but again, too fast. It used to be used by machine shops 30 years ago strictly for engines that were about to be torn down so they wouldn't have to fight through so much sludge during teardown, then somehow it got twisted on the internet in more recent years that it was a great idea to flush engines that were still in service, but it's not. ATF is to be used as a flush strictly for pre teardown only!

Auto Rx takes a long time to clean out an engine and will take 2 full treatments to do it right , but the results are well worth it and you will likely find that you have increased compression and easier starting after as well

I ran a bottle in my automatic tranny for 5000 miles,
then changed the pan filter & did a complete flush at Bills'
in his garage last weekend

Changed the oil & filter then added (2) bottles to clean
the engine also

That is good stuff

Get two bottles of Auto Rx, will run you around $50 but well worth it though. Do EXACTLY how it says to on the bottles.

All these idi engines has piston oil cooling jets that squirt oil up under the pistons. Those jets have an opening around 50 or 60 thousands... cleaning out the sludge in an engine can easily plug those up if you try to clean it really fast... Like using ATF or straight diesel.... Even idleing the engine you have incrediable stresses on the bottom end from the high compression these diesels make. Someday watch just how fast the engine stops turning when you turn off the ignition. Sometimes its so sudden that a poorly installed clutch fan willl loosen up and eat into the radiator.... If you actually see this happening theres nothing you can do but watch as the fan blades tear into the soft radiator.... Auto RX sounds like the safest cleaner to use.. Several members here have used it and felt it worked great.... Thats hands on experiance... Not something to read about on the internet or what a "friend" does... BTW... What makes you feel you need to clean out the engine anyway.... My original engine with either 275 or 375 thousand miles on it was clean when I pulled it down...

It was 30 degrees and going down fast at 3:00 AM when I was out in the greenhouses checking the heaters to make sure all of the 23 that were supposed to be working were OK. After that it was 26 at 7:00 AM and my hands were so cold (I was not wearing gloves) that I couldn't cling to my Bible or my guns. Now is warming up so...

You may want to check out Bob Is The Oil Guy's website. LOTS AND LOTS of info on Auto Rx and many other products over there. I cant figure out for the life of me why more people dont check out that website

From the research I have done on auto rx, its a plant based ester and running royal purple oil might do the same thing(ester based oil). Most over there recommend just doing a solvent flush, as there is huge debate as to wether auto rx does anything better than todays high detergent oils.

You may be surprized at what you find out about your favorite lubricants and additives, there is a tremendous amount of mis-information out there. Most of it is just marketing(lucas oil products come to mind). That website has been invaluable to me( I especially like the ****** oil anaylis section)
