Engine bay access tricks?

I too graduated to a topside creeper but before that, one of those two step ladders worked to get me up there but reaching to the back was always the worst. I don't have a pic but I cut up a 3/4" sheet of plywood, about 24"x36" notched it for the hood latch and then sort of built up around the hood latch with 2x4s and scrap so it wasn't so pokey and was just more of a lump. Then I used a belt sander to kind of round it off some more. Layed it from the hood latch back to cover the IP and reach the lower part of the airbox on the turbo. Still uncomfortable but better than the bruises the hood latch constantly delivered.

I just use pallets and work around the latch. Easy to "borrow" and no need for storage. The job at hand determines how many I stack up. 6'3", 260 with long arms.
