Electric Fan Clutch

Any thoughts as to how this might work for us??? I know the psd waterpump is reverse rotation from what we have but its something to think about.

I wonder if you could machine an adapter to make it fit. Then you would have to mount a PSD fan backwards maybe? Or make our metal one fit it. No doubt the computer just controls it then. Which of course, for us, means you control it. .

7.3 psd didnt have a elecric fan, Id bet that is a 6.0 part, not shure if the threads are differnt or not or for that fact if a psd is different than an IDI, other than fan rotation, and id even bet that the fan bolt pattern is the same.

If it has internal threads, then it would just need a threaded shaft to attach it, one end righthand (if it's not LH too) and the other lefthand. Finding the LH die may be hard and costly. Seems pretty easy to make it work.

Horton and Kaiser make the same thing for truck engines....Mercedes put's the same sort of thing on their 900 mid range engines....I've been eyeballing them at work.

That is off a 6.0 not a 7.3 psd. they work pretty well and I am pretty sure it could be modified to work on ours. I have seen a few of them at the shop that have gone bad for whatever reason but I have seen more bad egr coolers than bad fan clutches.

I will do some digging and see if I can find one and modify it to work.

with all the talk of our fan clutches lately, i have been thinking about if an electric one from a psd would work. i dont think wiring it up to would be hard. just hook it up to a temp switch. now someone needs to figure out how to get it bolted on.

Mounting one is easy - turn the inside threads smooth on a lathe (so the clutch just slides on the water pump shaft instead of threading on it), then get a 1/4" round plate of steel, drill the center out so it fits snug around the clutch shaft nut, drill four holes in the water pump pulley bolt patter, slide this new mounting hub on the but portion of the clutch shaft and weld them together good - now your clutch bolts up to the water pump with the 4 bolts for the pulley, but it still pilots on the pump shaft.

All well and good but I am almost certain that fan clutches are directional. The electric solenoid changes the pitch of some blades in there much like a torque converter. So, even if you make an adaptor it will most likely not work rite. For all those with onboard air, look up an air clutch like mentioned above.

BTW, that is almost certainly off a 6.0 I dont think the 7.3 ever had an electric fan clutch.
