I blew out a line to my cooler and dyed all the snow in the drive red. I want to make sure of the capacity of my trans.

19 quarts without the torque converter empty? I will add gradually but want to purchase enough on the way home from work tomorrow.

IIRC the dipstick reads Mercon V. Mercon V isn't made anymore? Should I purchase fluid compatable with Mercon V? This gets too confusing...

On a side note, the fluid all over my brick drive looks very healthy!

19 quarts with the converter empty maybe, if it's full it takes a whole lot less than that - when I drop my pan she takes a bit over a gallon to bring up to proper level.

The fluid is Dextron/Mercon III actually, you can upgrade to Mercon V but it's a whole lot more expensive

What he said, but my experience is about 6.5 quarts with the pan down. I think you are looking at 17-19 quarts depending on the pan depth.

4x4 pan emptied and a drained TC, around 16 qts.

So bottom line if he only lost the the fluid in the pan (which is what most likely happened), he should do alright if he gets two gallons of ATF for the time being, right? Cause I'm pretty sure even with a 4x4 pan he will have about a quart left.

I actually don't know how much I lost. I was pumping it out of the transmission via the cooler "supply" line.

Mercon V is the current stuff. Pick up a couple of gallons, it will be fine.

i usually just buy it by the case. i think i put nearly two cases in when i changed my converter last week.

it should be over full on the dipstick however because the dip stick is actually measured wrong. my tranny guy reground a mark on mine when he rebuilt my tranny. it about an 1/8" above the plastic part on the dip stick. he said that it needs more because if you get on a steep hill the fluid will be too far from the pickup in the pan.

but i also have a really really big cooler. probably hols three quarts by itself

Install a Mag Hitech pan on the E4OD.. That alone will give you 2 gallond more trans fluid... Yeap... Thats what I said... An extra 2 gallons..... Its gonna be costly when I change the fluid in my BTS trans later on.... I have around 15,000 miles on it....
