Yesterday I decided to replace the drivers side u-joint as it was toast. What a total pain in the butt, spent the biggest part of the day doing just one side. Worse part was getting the spindle off, soaked it with penetrating oil and and use a flat wide chisel and finally got it off.
I had 2 different u-joints that I had saved from some where in the past when I replaced the U-joints in both of my drive shafts, both were good enough to be saved when I replaced all the u-joints in the front and rear drive shafts.
As I didn't know what size the stub axle u-joint was I got the smallest one out that came out of front drive shaft and NO FIT, too small, OK try the one that came out of the rear drive shaft and guess what, it was the same size as the one in the stub shaft. So now I have a greasable u-joint for the front axle stub shaft and I CAN GET A GREASE GUN ON IT. I was told I would not be able to grease it and I would break off the fitting when I used 4X4. I tried it out and I did not break off the fitting.
Now I get to replace the passenger side today but I had to get a new U-joint. I went to my local NAPA and had them look up the number for the front stub axles and cross it and sure enough the rear drive shaft has the same number as the stub axle. This I am sure is going to be another ordeal getting the spindle off but now I have some insight as how to get the job done.
Just thought I would share this bit of info
