I have never read anywhere what the weird rubber pipe leaving the bottom of the air cleaner is for(a lot of other equipment has it also) but I always guessed that this was a water drain for the air cleaner housing. Is this a correct assumption?

One question; Since you are running the intake into the same chamber that supplies the fresh air to the HVAC system of the truck, does anyone notice any smell drifting into the cowl after the engine is turned off? By smell, I mean any diesel smell or any crankcase/oil smell from the cdr drifting up through the aircleaner, and into the cowl area.

Sounds like it works well, and I have been thinking about doing it, but I know how you guys sometimes forget to mention little quirks and unexpected surprises that come up sometimes with these modifications. I believe I read one thread where a noticed difference is an increase in intake noise with this mod correct?

These would be my questions too. How much smell and noise is associated with this mod?

I like the looks of the cowl hood that's posted above. Whether it's useable as an intake would depend on how it's made. If it's just open underneath, you'd have to make ducting to go in the raised hole. Most aftermarket "cowl" hoods are purely for decoration or clearance, not really "induction".

If there is a turbo installed then that drain is non existent, that was what I was getting at... I'm sure some companies have a drain but some might not, either way mine will!

I haven't noticed any smell in the cabin at all. I ve only used heat so far though. My 7.3idi came with the stock turbo and has a hole in the bottom of the air intake.

there is no problem with snow or rain,nor any odd smells after this mod was done to my N/A.
i can't speak for turbo,but there is no extra noise associated with it on my N/A.
i ran it all winter,without a drop of moister entering the duct.
after i first put it on last summer or fall,whenever it was.i inspected the ducting in a rain storm,and not a single drop of moister was present.
i simply cleaned the hood/cowl off after every snow storm.at first being cautious,then i realized,no snow was going down there with my brushing it across the cowl or anything.checked it from time to after a few snow storms and same result.a clean,dry air duct.so i just run 'er all winter.

I'm not questioning how well the mod you did worked in any way, but it's been in the back of my mind to make a ram air hood myself for a while now and curious if anyone has made one or bought one and if so what it did...

It works great, and even with the old pump (pre-Baby Moose) there was a noticeable difference in roll-on performance at 50 and above. Below that, all that ram (cool) air does is provide cooler denser (little more efficient) intake charge for the engine, with or without turbo and or intercooler. My scoops face forward, and in a pouring Fla. thunderstorm @ 60mph all I did was turn off the water/**** injection system for a while until we were through it. I don't get the impression that Henry even noticed.

! Yes, there is.. I was limited in my choice of location by the hood reinforcing channels on the interior of the hood and acceptable scoop aesthetics on the exterior. As in all things, a compromise.

Yeah, my gut feeling was the same- but then I realized that the entire enclosed area was at a higher air pressure, because the dead air space behind the ports was under compression and essentially acted as a wall.
