The question that comes to mind about the Dealers Diesel rebuild is did they bore it or sleeve it... If they sleeved it how many cylinders did they sleeve. Then the crank.. Is it standard or 10 under... Anything more than 10 under is a junk crank in my oppinion. At least I wont run anything more than 10 under and for a very good reason.

What is your reason behind not going more than 10 under?

I'm guessing that most shops that turn a crank don't properly reharden it after turning it. .010 will still be ok but any more gets you out of the hard surface.

For that price if the seller is willing to get it running (cold) in front of Me I'd buy it.

I wouldnt jump on it for that price. Honestly (at least in my area) These motors are worth nothing. I had my parts truck running, (ran like a TOP) SUPPOSEDLY its a turbo spec still have no idea how to prove it, but it was a brand new longblock installed in 07, with receipts. The highest cash ready to go offer I got which was for the motor, all accessories, radiator, AND rv torque converter was $350. :rotflmao I figured if thats all these are going for I will keep it as a spare, as mine has 310k on it; and just the ease of having spare accessories ALONE is worth more then $350 to me. GRANTED I live in Tucson where money simply doesnt exist right now.

He either actually wants it gone and is willing to let it go for like $400-$500, or he is extremely proud of it and wont. If you cant pick it up real cheap too risky imo.

Since when do they harden a crank throw? I've seen millions of cranks, cast and forged, but never have I seen a crank being hardened.

As far as i'm concerned, any engine that is not in a position to where you can fire it up and run it , is nothing more than a rebuildable core. Id have to agree with the above prices.. and those are a bit on the generous side for something coming from an individual and not from a wrecking yard that will at least give your money back if the core is junk

I've never bought a used engine I couldn't run. With that said the money doesn't seem bad for what I've seen these go for around here. Now if the motor is a complete greaseball it would be worth much less to me than a motor that looks clean and relatively new. I'm not talking a good power wash job either. It also depends to me whether it has the accesories and stuff with it or just a bare motor. A long block doesn't have the value to me that a fully dressed engine does.

I have a dealers diesel in my crewcab and it has been a spectacular engine. Unless I just lucked out and got a good one I wouldn't hesitate to buy a dealers diesel. We also owned a S1600 Uhaul International truck with a 7.3 diesel diesel in it and it was a great motor.
