Alternator Problem...

When I start my uncles 9? 7.3 PSD truck the voltmeter reads just above 8 volts then takes about 20 minutes of driving then it surges to the far right of the gauge then with another 45 minutes of driving returns to the middle of the range. Any odea what could be causing this?

Check all the connections at the wiring harness on the alternator. Those wires are easy to crush when you're poking around in the engine compartment. It could be that the sheath is melted, wires are cracked, etc.

Otherwise, that sounds like symptoms of an ailing alternator. Right before it goes, it will spike. Might be worth pulling it out and having it bench tested. All the parts stores will do a free bench test for you.

On top of the alternator there are tiny wires. Three in a connector clip and one of those wires goes to the other single connector. It's that single wire connection that may be causing your problem. Try wiggling it or better yet splice in a new connector clip on the single end. IIRC that wire goes to the stator and if not secure your voltage will fluctuate.

When I changed my alternator, the plastic clip on the wire broke. Now, it will not lock into place. Didn't work properly, until I took a small piece of cardboard and shoved it next to the connector. Makes great contact now and works great!

Better yet a $.15 female spade connector is the real fix. That's what I did.

I'll check that out today. Along with a general EVAL of the whole wire situation. Luckily I don't have to drive that truck every day.

Here's mine. The view is from the back. It's an aftermarket 200 amp alternator but it takes the exact same connectors as the stock one does.

How often does a real fix cost $.15?
