air filter plastic by driver side battery

Is there a way around the end of the air filter case that bolts to frame over the drives side battery on '93 idi, just curious I've looked thru posts n haven't seen anything n I've noticed ppl running turbos still have it.

running a big round air filter like tuner cars/trucks wouldn't work will it or like off road old school gasser rigs, just looking for ideas since charging batteries or any on driver's side you have to unbolt it.

The cold air from it isn't too important maybe 5 horsepower you can run any filter set up really but filter must be big enough and not a Spector brand filter. On non turbo trucks I would recomend a carb style air cleaner as the intake on these trucks is quite loud
