Lets see how good you guys are cause Im stumped. 97 f350 crew cab auto psd. I have a vibration that I thought was the rear driveline, replaced ujoints and carrier bearing and no weights are missing. removed drive shaft and still get slight vibration running it without driveline but worse with driveshaft in it. Pulled transfer case and it feels real smooth but didnt open it up. Seems to be the worst in Over drive and cant even feel it in 1st and 2nd. Trans is fairly new with about 6 k miles on it with a billet converter. Dont say its tires cause I run it with axles removed with no improvement. Tried removeing only rear portion of driveshaft and running it and still feel vibration. Would tranny be the issue? Any ideas? Next would be balancing drive line but can still feel it when it is removed.

Welcome to the OB.
We've got some pretty knowledgable guys on here.

Lets see how good you guys are cause Im stumped.
We don't gaurantee anything and no warranty.:D That's quite a challenge you present, setting behind a keyboard here.
Looks like you ruled out about everything to the rear. Must be a 4X4 with a transfer case. But need some answers.
Did you do the tranny installation, or a shop when rebuilt?
Did vibration start after the tranny rebuild?
Are you running the front drive shaft, without wheels locked up?
Did you check the TC to flexplate nuts? Assume you have a E4OD with 4 bolt TC.
A cracked flexplate will give a vibration.
Are the bellhousing bolts tight?

Back to you after the answers.

A shop did the tranny because of a flex plate vibration, they installed a road ripper 2 tranny, with a new flex plate and billit converter. still had a slight vibration so after hours with ford on the phone they suggested weights on the flex plate, which I installed and cured the vibration. now for this issue, it does not vibrate in neutral, only in gear in high or overdrive. its been about 6000 miles since the tranny work with no issues till now. the front driveshaft isnt turning when it vibrates but when the rear driveshaft was removed I did enguage the front and the vibration seemed worse. the e4od is a 5 bolt tc. havent checked the bell housing bolts but like I said no vibration in neutral . the rpms really doesnt matter cause going down the road about 60 I kicked it in neutral and let the engine idle and it still vibrated so it seems to be speed related to the transfer case or the back half of tranny, just my thought. the tranny still has 1 1/2 yrs left on warrenty, but dont want to take it back and pay a bunch to have them tell me it is something else and not fix it unless you guys think its tranny issued. I can rebuild the tc myself if it is in it.

Did you run it in 4WD Hi to see if the vibration increased or didn't make any difference? You can pull the tc, as long as you keep the short connecting tc drive shaft in the trans.,I think there is a snap ring that holds it in anyhow there is a needle bearing support in the trans for the output shaft and also one in the tc to support that shaft. If either one of those bearings is shot, that could cause the vibration.
I think you have to drain the tc tho, not sure of that.
"trackspeeder" on here knows these trannies a whole lot more than I do.
You say the torque convertor is a 5 bolt, never seen or heard of that. E4OD has a 4 bolt and the 4R100 goes to a 6 bolt. As far as I know the 4R100 was from 99.5 on up.

The bolts on the TC is either 5 or 6, I know because I had to mark them for the weights I added, Just cant remember 5 or 6. Yes I ran it in 4wd hi and the vibration was the same, but when I pulled the TC the output shaft in the tranny did have about 1/16 to 1/8 in slop. thought it didnt matter cause it slides into the shaft on the TC. My son said run it till it gets worse and make it easier to find but it drives me nuts. I didnt know of the needle bearings, might be it! I know the TC shafts were good and tight with no slop. When it warms up I might pull the tc again. Can you pull the needle bearing out the rear of tranny? Thanks for your help

Well I finally ordered a bearing kit for the transfer case. I tore into the case and it looked like new inside, but since I got the bearings I replaced them all. Guess what NO MORE VIBRATION. What a shock, all bearings felt good so I thought, what next? but test drove it today and smooooooth as silk.
