Try this, tape a piece of string on the drive shaft then simply drive exactly one tire revolution forward. If the string is then wrapped around the drive shaft 3.5 times you have 3.55 gears, a little more than 4 times you have 4.10 gears, I am thinking you will have string wrapped 4.5 times and that will be the answer as to where your diesel is going.
