Hi, I'm Nate. I have been on here for 4 years. Since I bought my 1992 centurion with a 7.3 IDI. When I bought it I called the guy I bought it from and asked if he had ran the right coolant for cavitation and he said what is cavitation. I love it and it has worked well for my. 2 years ago the e40d started sliping out of third gear and has continued to get worse. And the 7.3 is tired. It had 150k when I bought it and now has 187k.

So I have the opportunity to buy 6.9(sort of a rebuild 2 years ago) with an ats turbo that is about 6 months old and a zf5(with the clutch pedal and other required conversion stuff) for 1000.

Thoughts?

Nate

Well Nate... What is your question...;Poke:popcorn
If you wanted to ask if a 6.9 will bolt into the same place a 7.3 came out of then the answer is yes. Actually they are drilled exactly that same. These two engines also use the same internal parts. Can you tell us what was done to the partially rebuilt 6.9???

The seller says "New rods and mains, rings, 2 new pistons, new water pump, oil cooler, glowplugs, new luk fly wheel, had the turbo rebuilt. The turbo and zf5 are out of a 1994 f-350. Also got a reverse shackle kit as part of the deal.

So I would like to replace the head bolts with studs, and install boost and exhaust gauges(suggestions on gauges?)
What else should i do before installing in truck?

I'm planning to keep the 7.3 as a spare.

I mean, a cam would be nice.
New injectors and ip never hurt either.
Oh yeah, pull those glowplugs to make sure they're BERU.

sounds like you should put it in the way it is. are the studs even necessary with the ATS turbo?
nice score. will make your Centurion work well. I have a 1990 C350 4x4 Centurion but its a rotten pile awaiting a full resto project.

The reason for a set of head studs is not the gaskets. Its the weak head bolts being 7/16. Sadly there is no way possible to drill and re tap the new head bolt holes to 1/2 inch so DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS. You will end up with about 1/2 the thread depth and that will not hold. The studs are the only recognised way to keep things running on any 6.9....

I noticed some dirt arounf the thermostatic spring on the fan clutch .. Look closely. If the shaft seal is wet then the clutch is shot. Do not use it.
