Interesting that both of the clear hoses you linked say not intended for use with diesel fuel.

all the black fuel hose if fuel rated, is good for gas or diesel.

You are the first person that I have ever heard say anything about gas specific or diesel specific hose From the research I have done, and personally seen, biodiesel needs a specific hose,, but every fuel hose I have been able to find is rated for gas or diesel.

Can you provide some examples, I am genuinely curious as I do lots of work with diesel stuff and have used regular fuel hose with no issues. But if there is a better way, I am all for it.

So transmission, Water, power steering, gasoline, diesel... all are different; some are similar, all are different . If you use the incorrect hose type, it will eventually fail. Clear Diesel-rated fuel hose is especially sensitive . So getting the correct type of clear fuel-rated hose is key if you want to not have to do the job twice.

On the 6.9/7.3 IDI platform, the injector return system is a low‑pressure, vacuum‑biased circuit. It does not push fuel out — it pulls fuel through the return rails and back to the tank. Because the system operates under suction, any compromised seal will:

  • Pull air IN
  • Without leaking fuel OUT
This is the core failure mode.


1. The Injector Cups Use Two O‑Rings — Both Critical

Each injector has two O‑rings:

  • Upper O‑ring — seals the return cup
  • Lower O‑ring — seals the injector body in the bore
When these O‑rings harden, flatten, crack, or lose elasticity, the return cup no longer seals against the injector. The return rail vacuum then pulls air through the compromised O‑ring.

This creates:

  • Air intrusion into the return rails
  • Air ingestion into the fuel system
  • Drain‑back after shutdown
  • Hard starts / long cranking
  • Random stalling
  • Unstable idle
This is exactly why the return system must be rebuilt as a complete assembly — not piecemeal.


2. The Return Caps & Lines Form a Continuous Vacuum Path

The plastic return caps and the short sections of hose between injectors form a closed loop.If any cap, hose, nipple, or O‑ring leaks:

  • The entire loop becomes compromised
  • Air enters at the weakest point
  • The lift pump receives aerated fuel
  • The injection pump loses prime
  • The engine becomes progressively harder to start
This is why replacing “one or two caps” never works.The system must be rebuilt as a matched set.

Come on man....show some proof to back up your claim of diesel only and gasoline only fuel rated black rubber fuel hose.

Also, your understanding of the return system is wrong. There is a slight positive pressure innthe returns while the engine is running. The only time air can be pulled into the returns is while the engine is off.

I have seen lots of black fuel line rated for Gasoline only. Every time I have seen black fuel line that is rated for diesel, it is also rated for gasoline.
Similarly, I have seen fuel line rated for gasoline and not E85. But every time I have seen fuel line rated for E85 it is also rated for gasoline and diesel.
