Yes it is shift on the fly..........if I remember correctly its up to 50 mph, I sure dont do that but have done it going 20 mph on both my 01 and the new 04.5 and no problem

Welcome to the dark side. I've shifted mine at 60 or so before. Came up on some ice and needed the gears to slow down. I'm sure the owners manual says what the limits are. I thought mine said 65, but I guess I had better check. There have been a few instances with the 3rd gens where they got stuck in 4x4. Some in 4-low. I think all were the ones with a knob rather than lever.

Ok, I checked mine. Granted it is for a '98 model it says I can shift in up to 55 mph. Check the index of your manual under four-wheel-drive.

as long as you arent spinning when you shift, you can shift any time.
