4 in exaust on a idi

My egts are high when I get into a good pull with my 92 7.3 turbo idi. I figured 4in exaust would take care of the problem, but no one sells it for a idi that I can find. My qusetion is can I use 4in exaust for like a 95 powerstroke same body style, or is there a reason its not offered for the idi

There's no market demand for the IDI style trucks, and that is why high performance parts are in short supply. You can give Hypermax a call, they have a large diameter exhaust system available for the trucks, including the downpipe.

The Hypermax system is designed for the IDI motor from the engine all the way back. If you want to use a PSD system, you are going to have to make a downpipe to fit, since the engines are different.

I've got a 4" MBRP exhaust on my truck, that was intended for an early powerstroke. you will have to fabricate the part that connects to the downpipe, but the rest works fine. I did have to relocate the front hanger on the frame, but the holes were pre-drilled from the factory so I just moved it back about a foot. Mine's hooked to the downpipe of an ATS turbo kit, and the powerstroke exhaust kit included a 4" to 3" reducer that hooked right up to the downpipe with minimal welding/cutting.

Incidentally, the PSD downpipe that was included in my kit made for a nice intake tube that someone else on the board is now using...

4" is overkill, but the MBRP was cheaper than the Hypermax/ATS/Banks kits that are purpose built for the IDI trucks.

Well there ya go Darrin has your parts. Now don't run a muffler and get a better turbo down pipe. Darrin can show you what a stock crushed down pipe looks like. These trucks with turbos don't need a muffler.The turbo chops up the sound signiture so well. The only time the sound becomes a noise is when your pulling a grade loaded.... Then all trucks sound loud because there working hard.....

I don't think you could get a Hypermax exhaust to hook up to the factory turbo system any easier than a 4". If this is a factory PSD exhaust it's probably 3.5" Gary is right there is no use for a muffler. Also you can get all kinds of connectors, reducers and increasers at NAPA where you can also get a 4" pipe, straight pipe though, not purpose built and almost no one has the tools to bend 4" pipe. It sounds like everyone is saying a PSD exhaust will bolt up with minimum fabrication and massaging, which is what I heard when I was looking as well.

yes psd exaust is a good option but when i do my exaust im just going to buy the pipe from jegs and make my own im even thinking of making my own stcks cause im running out of money

4" is perfect IMHO. Gets EGT's lower, and makes the truck sound more mellow and deep.

Me and Russ fabbed mine up, cost about $160, though I need a tip big time (to get exhaust exiting outside of the fender). PSD exhaust should work ok, but will require some mods.

4" is nice because so many other guys run 4" on their diesels, certain exhaust bits are easy to find.

Right now, I have it going to 4" off the downpipe, then a short section of straight pipe, a Walker 21172 muffler, a 90 degree bend and then it comes out in front of the tire. Sounds a lot better than a straight pipe and works just fine.

I'm STILL debating whether or not I want to try to put my stacks setup back on with 4" stacks...I dunno.

If what Darrin has doesn't work, you can buy a tail pipe for a 94-97 PSD truck and a section of 4" straight pipe. You will have to fab up the connection from your down pipe but that's all.
