1989 S1600 x Uhaul truck 7.3 IDI Fuel Mileage
I have one of these, an old UHaul truck with a 25 foot box. I'm getting around 10 MPG running 65 MPH on the flat with a few hills that do not pull down below 55 MPH. I replaced the IP with a rebuilt unit. It smokes white exhaust excessively on startup but mostly clears a few miles down the road. When driving slow, like in town, and then depressing the accelerator it does pour out more black smoke that it did before the replacement. This leads me to think the...- hrsitton

1989 7.3 IDI International/Navistar exhaust smoke analysis
Recently installed a rebuilt injector pump. This was the first real drive since. Driving along in 5th gear with partial throttle at about 45 MPH the exhaust blows black with slight acceleration and then white with slight deceleration. Is the white smoke unburned fuel...maybe? Should there be a fuel flow in the return line from the IP with the electronic fuel pump running and ignition switch at run position but engine not running? Thanks, Harold- hrsitton
