6.9 IDI-what kind of battery charger do I get from

    Fast idle solenoid

That's really what I'd like to do, I've just never seen anyone do it to an idi and haven't been brave enough to attempt to figure it out myself. I don't think the heater that goes in the lower hose is very expensive either.

    Fast idle solenoid

The biggest reason I considered eliminating the block heater is that even though it is identified by the emissions label as an 87 6.9 it is actually the earlier "440" block that I've been told is prone to crack around the block heater area. This one is in fact not cracked (before the chicken...

    Fast idle solenoid

I have a new old stock cord from ford, I bought it because the original cord caught fire the second I plugged it in it was in such poor shape. I can get an o.e.m ford heater for $70 but the heater works and is probably new since this is a reman engine. It only leaks when it's super cold outside...

    Fast idle solenoid

Thanks guys, I ordered the one from classic diesel design, for $25 plus shipping you can't beat it. Edit* now if I can find that pesky o ring for the block heater I will be good to go!

    Fast idle solenoid

I am in need of a replacement fast idle solenoid for my 87 6.9, mine is there but has spilled it's internals all over the valley pan. I have looked on eBay with no luck and have not seen an idi in any of the junkyards I frequent in quite some time. If anyone has one they are willing to part ways...

    6.9 or 7.3?

The probe is a thermocouple huh? Like on a gas fired furnace or water heater, produces a very small current when heated, I truthfully did not realize that but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for that info! The gauge has 3 wires in (12v+, ground and 12v for the light) and wires 2 out that go to...

    6.9 or 7.3?

16098821371834543944283083636002 by SuperDave posted Jan 5, 2021 at 4:30 PM I think my pyrometer done had died it's stuck where it is now and won't move. It's got power and a good ground and is connected to the probe still it's just not working. Anybody got any idea how to diagnose these to...

    Refrigerant leak around this valve?

Cool! I didnt know you could even still get those tools, they have disappeared off all the tool trucks and I haven't seen them in years. I have a few myself and they work well for the job.

    Refrigerant leak around this valve?

You will want to evacuate the freon before attempting to remove the valve, the system is under some pressure even when not operating usually in the neighborhood of 100 psi. If you don't own a vacuum pump for ac systems and a good set of manifold gauges then I'd recommend taking it to someone...

    Refrigerant leak around this valve?

That's the a/c dryer and it's not coolant that's leaking it's the green dye that's added to some refrigerant oils, this has a tendency to happen when the hose is disconnected/ reconnected for filling/checking refrigerant level. If it's not from that then it's possible that the schrader valve is...

    Hot Transmission

I had the same issue with my '94 f350, everytime I had a trailer it would heat up and eventually it started shuddering on long hills even with no trailer. Turns out when the trans was built they used a cheap reman converter, I got a billet converter and went ahead and did the solenoid pack and...

    Anybody use a grid heater?

I have thought numerous times about installing one from a powerstroke in my 86, I have an early banks sidewinder that has a 3/4 npt hole directly over the intake manifold inlet or if it needed to be further down in the intake I could weld a bung to the cdr block off plate and put it there. The...

    Proper timing equipment?

I'd like to find one of the original ford/rotunda timing tools like the dealership would have had back when they worked on these engines. My old boss had one that he bought when the dealer he worked for closed and I used it on my 91idi and my 94 idit and it was amazing how different they ran...

    E4od swap in a 6.9

I did an e4od swap on my '86 f350 a while back and I can tell you it's not as bad as a lot of people will make it sound. I found a complete donor truck in a junkyard (90 f350 cab& chassis), pulled the trans and every part that was different as well as all the wiring and trans control computer...

Coolant running down outside of torque convertor inspection cover

I was going to say the same thing, a few years back my grandfather's 88 7.3 started overheating and loosing coolant he called me and said it was dripping off the inspection cover and wherever he took it told him he needed a new engine. I told him to limp it as far as he could and I would head...

Modify 7.3 idi vs cummins swap

Cummins swaps in my personal opinion are just over done, if you don't stick with the idi then a ford/New Holland 6.6 from an 80's medium duty truck is a good option with plenty of torque also a c7 cat is a really good option if you get one that is pre emissions and can be found reasonably priced.

6.9 sounds like it has spark knock

No, but I have had that happen before and it has a very similar sound, I also got the cruise control cable stuck between the air cleaner housing and intake which made a really strange sound. I'm pretty sure I have an injector that's either dripping fuel or has opening pressure that is lower...

6.9 sounds like it has spark knock

The 6.9 installed in my bronco has taken to making a spark knock sound under a load, it doesn't matter if the engine is cold or hot it makes this sound and I am assuming I need new injectors as I have already removed the valve covers and checked the upper valvetrain for any issues as well as...

    Block heater thought?????

I'd like to see one of those heaters that go in the lower radiator hose installed, I have never seen it done and would like to see how it was done successfully. I have 2 6.9 engines that have dead heaters and one that is an early block and doesn't have a block heater at all so the heater in the...

    Rewiring block heater

I will give a warning about splicing those cords, someone spliced the one on my '85 and did a wonderful job by soldering and shrink wrapping the wires but that good job didn't stop it from catching on fire at the splice and screwing up a perfectly good grill and trans cooler. Just FYI

Swapping e4od, how to flush lines?

You can buy a cheap a/c flush gun that is powered by compressed air and fill it with mineral spirits, that's what my trans guy recommended when he did mine. I have also bought a cheap electric fuel pump and used it to pump clean solvent thru the lines until it comes out as clear as it goes in...

    Injector cores

I figured they are probably someone out there that wants them, thought about sending the "BB" lucas injectors to be refurbished and just sending the extras along as "gifts"

    Injector cores

I have a few sets of core injectors laying around from where I have bought new ones without cores. Are they worth anything to anyone or should I just trash them? There are 2 sets of united technology coded "D" I think and one set of stanadyne coded "G". There is also a set of cav coded "BB"...
