I will do a button before I tear apart the steering column.
But I don't want to do that if it's just the NSS.
I don't know if it's a bricknose. It's a 1987 F250.
I did mess with the shifter position and also tried neutral. Thanks for the thought though.
I started a new thread about the ignition and fuel (edit: neutral) safety switch since I'm past dealing with the solenoid.
Thanks again for all the replies here.
No start situation.
I confirmed good solenoid and good starter. No 12v from ignition to solenoid.
On top of the steering column I can see the actuator rod move when I turn the key to start. I even put pliers on the rod and tried to move the rod further. It woudn't go any further than the key was...
Bingo. Thank you! I never would have thought of that.
So now I now the solenoid works. That's progress.
No, I'm not getting juice to the small wire when I turn the key to start. So I guess I'm going into the steering column. :-(
Thanks again!
I got the new starter in and now it turns over when I jump the large solenoid posts.
But still not when I turn the key.
I jumped from the + battery terminal to the small post on the solenoid using a light tester. The light lit (confirming there was current flowing) but the solenoid didn't click...
I got it.
I had to run to the store and get some different 1/4" wobble extensions and I did just as you said.
I taped that whole rig with the bolt in onto the top of the starter before going under the truck. Then I just stuck the starter in the hole, started the 2 lower bolts in to get it...
Sounds like I'm going to one of the auto-crap stores in the morning for a starter that I might be able to actually use and then sending my $220.00 "upgrade" Powermaster starter back to Summit Racing. Hopefully they don't expect me to pay for shipping.
I just sent an email to Powermaster, fwiw.
Will post their response if they send one.
Glad I don't need my truck any time soon. I guess that's why some folks pay $70K to not have our problems. ;-)
I have wobble extensions. No go.
I can't even get the socket by itself onto the head of the bolt on my bench, never mind when it's on the truck. The housing of the starter prevents it. (see picture) Only accessible with an open-end wrench from the side (wheel well?)
I guess my weekend will be...
I had a starter solenoid? issue which lead me to decide to upgrade my OEM? starter while I was addressing the problem.
I read here about the nasty top starter mounting bolt and was prepared for the fight.
I bought the recommended? Powermaster starter that I also read was easier to install and...
I ran from the city at a young age and never considered going back for any amount of money.
We have city friends that drive for hours to come here on many weekends to escape that crap and enjoy the life that we live for a couple days.
I often ask them, "Why don't you just move up here?". They...
I had a friend that was UPS and they had him do repetitive drills for taking the key out of the ignition, putting it in his pocket and getting out of the truck, taking it back out of his pocket and getting back in the truck and restarting the engine. I imagine they have many other techniques...
I ordered a new starter @ 10pm last night from Summit Racing in Ohio.
Tracking says label created at 12:00am last night. Package picked up by UPS at 1:30am and left OH at 4:30am.
Arrived in Buffalo, NY at 8:30am and left at 8:40am. I'll have it here in Maine tomorrow.
How they do that? I guess...
Thanks again to all of you. Great advice, as always.
Since the starter looks like hell anyway, I think I'll switch over to working from the starter up.
I just ordered a Powermaster Ultra Duty Diesel (gear reduction) Starter #9050. Sounds like it's a nice upgrade.
I'm not looking forward to...
That was my thinking. So why did it work to turn the starter before I replaced it and now it won't do that?
It looks identical to the one I removed (picture attached). Two small studs (S and I).
I'm pretty sure my test light lit from the S small stud that I pulled the booted wire off of. (kinda...
No clutch. C6. :-(
So I went down there after work and endured the mosquitos and disconnected both batteries and installed a new proper solenoid on the fender.
Still nothing when I jump it. Took it off and sanded the fender where the mounting bolt holds the ground strap and reinstalled.
Still...
There is already a ground strap to one of the mounting bolts.
Maybe the old wires didn't like the jostling around and I lost continuity in there somewhere.
I guess I'll just go down with a new solenoid and hope for the best. If no go then have it towed home 50 mi.
Thanks for all of the input !
Yeah, I'm leaning towards not having a good ground when I put it back in or maybe I did manage to get a wire wrong (less likely).
I was mostly wondering if I could have smoked something else that I should bring with me just in case.
Thanks.
I was able to start it and drive it by jumping the original solenoid posts.
I want to do that again and get the truck home but now it won't do that.
Good morning.
My truck wouldn't start. Solid click when turning the key. Had AAA come out and the batteries tested good so he left.
Read on here about jumping the solenoid on the fender. It started.
I bought a new solenoid. It looked different but I figured it would still work so I installed...
