I was thinking about how my dually sucks off road and get stuck really easy and how there really isnt a good point to attach a recovery strap to on the front end.The po obviously got it stuck or something and used the swap bar as a tie off point and bent and broke the sway bar bracket, not the best idea. I dont think there is really a ideal place to wrap a strap or chain around on these trucks? What is the best place? I have a2wd truck with the twin beam suspension and I was thinking around one of the beams, but if you started to really tug on one of them I think you could seriously damage your front suspension?? I know a front end trailer hitch reciver with pintle is ideal, I'm saying bone stock from factory.

Not sure if its a good idea or not, but I always wrapped my strap around a front leaf hanger. Could cause serious damage if something gives, but without having a receiver or tow hooks , its probably the sturdiest place I could find.....for future reference... invest in a good set of tires , these trucks actually do really good off road with a good set of rubber, just stay out of the soft stuff ...ya know
.the stuff with no bottom, you'll sink real fast

I'm not to sure over what your rig really is, but some good anchor points would be: The front cross-member, maybe the bumper mounts, or maybe a section of frame you might conceivably attach a clevis too.

My F350 actually has a spot on ONE side of the truck, passenger side frame rail in front of the crossmember that just barely fits a small chain hook. It was enough to get me and the trailer(17k gross combined) out of the mud.

FWIW though, I'll be looking into some front-mount tow hooks at some point.

To pull my 79 Ford F350 out of the mud we wrapped the chain around the passenger I beam neat the passenger tire. That is a twin I beam front end. No problems from it. Of course we didn't jerk it or anything

I always wrapped the strap around the front spring hanger. Never had an issue, but we weren't getting too wild with it like "jerking" the truck.

There just isn't any good place on the trucks with coils. You need to add a hook if you're off-roading.

On any truck with an axle or an I-Beam, that's fine. Just go around it and hook on the chain. There's a lot of meat there. Do it near the pivot point, or on a straight axle, do it near the diff.

Anyone roading should really think about a real bumper with D-rings, though... OE bumper is pretty lame

With that said, if anyone wants a '96 OE bumper let me know, I will trade ;) Had it on my truck for a while but I got a winch mount. Now looking for a great deal on a big winch.

Get yourself a good tow strap, you can jerk with them and not hurt anything, wrap on the frame so it goes underneath the bumper, that way it won't cut. If ya get real brave, get a couple of tow hooks (there expensive) cut a slot in the bumper and bolt to the frame.

best bet if your off road is to get a hitch in the front and or a winch, you could also weld some d rings on the frame, have to be careful with the strap, i know it seems like its ok to go on the frame but the strap will rub on the bumper and cut, had it happen to me, i would never pull on the spring hanger, doesn't seem like a good idea to pull on such a weak link when a 6000 to 8000lb truck plus the resistance from the mud is holding it back while you have another truck pulling on it,

My truck is 4x4, but someone added some hooks that are definitely stronger than oe.

If you want pics, let me know.

my truck is 4x4 also, and it sees a lot of sand and mud pulling my trailer and play truck in and out of bogs... i am planning on using some 2x3 thick wall tubing and going from frame rail to frame rail behind the bumper, putting a receiver through the 2x3, then trim my bumper to allow me to slide a hitch in when i need...
