I tried that with my 87. It did fine once we got moving, but I roasted the clutch getting it moving.
The trailer I towed had been stripped inside, but was 1/2 full of square bales. I called for a police ****** since had to go down a state highway. The officer looked at it and said he would follow, but if it fell apart on the road I was on my own.

Oh yes. It was bad. When I started the first time the clutch got hot enough to smell, but at one point I stopped on a hill and to get moving again I had to just dump the clutch and watch the smoke billow from the transmission. It didn't help that one tire blew early in the trip so it was just rolling on the rim the whole time.
If I had it to do over I would have used the f-250 in low range the whole time, but I thought the dually would handle the tongue weight better. You can see from the pic how high the front was riding. The ratchet strap you can see on the bed was to keep it from lifting. Its a dump with the hitch attached to the bed.
The clutch lasted another couple hundred miles and that was it.

Nah, if there was an issue running in low range 5th gear I would know about it by now. Particularly around the farm I run through all my gears in low range and stay there. Towing that trailer I never reached a speed beyond what low would handle, particularly since one wheel was steel.
