New owner of a 94 F250 4x4 here. I know with other truck models, there were some issues with the auto hubs, and owner would just convert to manual locking hubs. What is the general verdict on these?
The original owner of my truck drilled a small screw with a rubber gasket into the hubs. He says to add thick gear oil through the hole to lube the hubs. "old truck driver trick" he says. Is he crazy, or does this work?

Um... what do you expect? There are other topics out there about manual vs automatic hubs(manual are more reliable), and I have no clue about adding gear oil to the greased bearings. It might work...? If you can keep heavy oil in there(and not leak past the seals), oil is oil. Otherwise, just grease the darn thing every few years and it should be fine.

I see what he is doing. Just might work like he says. Not rocket science. I never had to add oil to my hubs over 47 years and none of them got stuck. Just do the recommended service and you are golden.
